TEXT:These islands in the Pacific Ocean are at the centre of a long-running territorial spat between Japan and China. Both claim the territories, which while little more than rocky outcroppings, sit atop potentially huge underwater gas fields. On Sunday, one of China's senior most military figures warned the United States not to interfere in the dispute. Cai Yingting, a deputy chief in the People's Liberation Army, said during talks in Washington that any intervention would damage ties between the world's two biggest economies. DEPUTY CHIEF OF CHINA'S PEOPLE'S LIBERATION ARMY (PLA) GENERAL STAFF CAI YINGTING SAYING: "We hope the U.S. will do more to safeguard peace in the region and maintain the overall good Sino-U.S. relations." Under a decades old treaty with Japan, the US would be obliged to defend the islands if they came under attack. But Washington has said it would not take sides in the dispute. Chinese and Japanese activists have landed on the islands in recent weeks, flaring diplomatic tensions and sparking protests in both countries.

3【Heavy fighting in Aleppo】
TEXT:Syrian rebels and forces loyal to President Bashar al-Assad battle for control of Aleppo. Video uploaded to a social media website --that Reuters cannot independently verify --purports to show some of the clashes. Reuters journalists in the city confirm there has been heavy fighting here. Fighter jets dropped bombs and fired missiles on rebel-held districts in the south of Aleppo as residents fled in panic on Sunday. This further activist video is said show the aftermath of one air strike on a building and oil tanker in the al-Bab district. Other footage reportedly documents an attack on the Bustan al-Zahara neighbourhood.
TEXT:At least seven people have been killed and a dozen left missing as winds of more than 100 miles per hour (170kmh) hit South Korea. The southern island of Jeju suffered damage as a typhoon battered the coastal regions of the Korean peninsula. Four people were killed and 12 left missing when Chinese fishing boats capsized on Jeju's shore. Thirteen fishermen were rescued alive. The typhoon stopped flights to and from the island, as the severe weather caused damage to buildings and roads. In Seoul, President Lee Myung-bak visited an emergency operation centre to be briefed on the situation. He urged officials to protect lives and property as the storm moves through. Schools were closed in the capital and in the south, but financial markets and government services remained open. The typhoon is expected to next hit North Korea, already suffering in the aftermath of severe flooding.

【Hitler’s Olympic Village Faces Conservation Battle】
TEXT:The 1936 Berlin Olympics gave Adolf Hitler an ideal showcase for Nazi propaganda.
Director Leni Riefenstahl’s famous film of the Games, Olympia, immortalized the sporting prowess and political context of the tournament. 76 years later conservationists are attempting to restore a remarkable physical remnant of the Games.
On the outskirts of Berlin the Village where 3,878 athletes lived and trained still survives, but only just. Jens Becker is from the Deutsche Kredit Bank Foundation which is funding much of the work. He took VOA on a behind-the-scenes tour, including the swimming pool, where the external renovations alone cost $2.7 million.
“I think the Village is not very well-known in Germany," said Becker. "We’re quite secret. This is a nice situation because when the people get in here, they are sometimes very surprised about all the things which are here standing over 75 years now.”
One building has been fully restored: the accommodation block that was home to American sprinter Jesse Owens. Displays tell how the man from Alabama won four gold medals, destroying Adolf Hitler’s hopes that the Games would become a showcase for the supposed superiority of the Aryan race.
A letter from a fan urges Owens to refuse to accept a medal from ‘bloodstained hands’. He never saw it; it was intercepted by the Gestapo, the German secret police.
In the gymnasium stands a pommel horse used by the athletes.
A few dozen German tourists join the guided tours each day. Local school groups are taken here to learn their nation’s history.
“We always try to put the subject inside these exhibitions because this was called the village of peace but indeed Nazi propaganda didn’t stop at the doors of the village," said Becker.
There were early signs of militarism. A carved mural in the on-site theater shows marching German soldiers.
“It was the first time that they really said we’ll have an Olympic village, later on it will be used as a garrison. But indeed when the athletes arrived they had the best facilities they’d ever had in any Olympic village before," explained Becker.
Days after the athletes left, hundreds of soldiers moved in. The former ‘Dining Hall of the Nations’ served as a hospital for wounded German troops during World War II.
After 1945 the Soviet army moved in - painting communist propaganda on the walls including a mural showing Soviet troops planting the hammer and sickle flag on the German parliament.
With the fall of communism the former village was abandoned in 1992 and neglected for over a decade.
Slowly life is returning to the village. Workers have nurtured a lush athletics field in the center. Next month a tournament will be held here featuring German Olympians who have just returned from London; part of a determined effort to preserve this living museum of 20th century history.

【A Room Where Nurses Learn How Not to Get Hurt】
TEXT:This is the VOA Special English Technology Report.
Nurses spend their lives helping other people recover from injuries and illnesses. Yet nurses suff
er a surprising number of injuries and illnesses themselves because of their work. In fact, the United States Department of Labor says nursing is the second leading profession for on-the-job injuries. It ranks higher than construction work and law enforcement. Only freight and stock movers report higher injury rates.
Nurses and other health care workers do a lot of heavy lifting on the job. Lifting and moving patients improperly leads to sprains, strains and muscle tears -- leading causes of injuries to nurses.
Gretchen Gregory is an instructor at the Sinclair School of Nursing on the Columbia campus of the University of Missouri. She says back problems are the greatest threat that nurses face when they lift or move patients.
GRETCHEN GREGORY: "You’re talking about people that have handicaps or limited mobility, that need much assistance. And we have untrained people to do that assisting and that puts them at risk for hurting their backs."
Ms. Gregory leads a new training room where nurses can learn to keep themselves and their patients safe. She says most nurses lack training in how to lift patients.
GRETCHEN GREGORY: "That's not something that we teach in school, but that's when falls happen and that's when nurses get hurt."
She says the safe practices room has special equipment, including a life-size mannequin doll. This "patient" can be made to weigh as much as one hundred fifty-nine kilograms.
GRETCHEN GREGORY: "We have a mannequin that we can fill up with water and he becomes a three-hundred-and-fifty-pound mannequin that they have to learn to use this transfer equipment to get patients in and out of bed or from another bed to a stretcher."
Ms. Gregory says most American hospitals have lifting equipment to help nurses move patients. But she says the equipment is often pushed back in a corner somewhere -- unused and forgotten. She says the safe practices room teaches the importance of using the tools and skills available.
GRETCHEN GREGORY: "Teaching students to take the extra time to use those and learning how to use them well and efficiently is going to be a key to helping prevent back injuries."
The training room also seeks to improve communication skills and other practices in a setting designed to copy a busy hospital or clinic.
GRETCHEN GREGORY: "If we provide an environment where everything’s nice and quiet and they can give their medications or they can communicate to a physician when there’s nothing going on, that’s not really a real-life setting. They have to be able to do it with some distraction."
An unidentified donor gave three hundred thousand dollars to build the new room. The University of Missouri describes it as one of the first of its kind at a nursing school in the United States. Pictures are at voanews.cn.
