Japanese journalist Mika Yamamoto died there Tuesday from wounds sustained in a gunfight between Syrian forces and rebels, becoming the first Japanese national killed in the 17-month-old conflict. The award-winning journalist worked for Tokyo-based independent news wire Japan Press and was travelling with the Free Syrian Army. Colleague Kazutaka Sato, who was travelling with her, said Yamamoto was his wife and they had been together for fifteen years. He explained that he could do nothing to help her, as he showed her bullet-scarred flak jacket. Yamamoto's death underscores the hostile environment in which journalists operate to cover the Syrian conflict, in which 18,000 people have been killed.

All 14 people on the boat were detained by Japan upon their arrival on the island last Wednesday. Captain Yeung Hong was emotional as he recalled the moment he first saw the island. KAI FUNG NO.2'S CAPTAIN YEUNG HONG SAYING: "When we managed to approach the island, I didn't know what to say. We raised the flag, then I returned to the boat -- as captain I must get back to the boat -- after I got back to the boat, I didn't know what to say. I only cried for five minutes." Both China's government, which faces a once-in-a-decade leadership change later this year, and Japan's Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda, are under domestic pressure to take a tough stance over the islands.

【US: Meles' Death Loss for Sudan Peace Process】
TEXT:Prime Minister Meles Zenawi played an active role in helping end the long-running civil war in Sudan. The U.S. Special Envoy for Sudan and South Sudan, Princeton Lyman, says his passing is a great loss.
"He was always a source of great counsel, wisdom," said Lyman. "But he also played a very dramatic role in helping bring about stability in Sudan and South Sudan, most particularly in providing peacekeepers to the troubled area of Abyeh."
Meles also backed African Union peacekeeping efforts in neighboring Somalia. The United States has lost an important ally, says the National Democratic Institute's Africa expert Christopher Fomunyoh.
"You have Somalia which is a failed state in the East, Sudan, which for many years was in the state of civil war, so Ethiopia became the anchor in that part of the African continent. I think the US is going to look for ways to maintain this relationship with Meles’ replacement," Fomunyoh noted.
Successive U.S. presidents, however, expressed concern about the prime minister's repression of political dissent.
State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland says Washington hopes Ethiopia's new leaders will improve human rights.
"We have not been shy about expressing concern where it is necessary, particularly with regard to journalists' freedom, human rights, etcetera," said Nuland. "So you will note that there is a reference to that in the public statements that we're making today, and we would always look for further improvements that can strengthen the system and support for people across Ethiopia."
Human rights abuses leave Prime Minister Meles with a mixed record, says Christopher Fomunyoh.
"The infrastructure is much improved compared to what it was during the civil war," said Fomunyoh. "He has done a lot to stabilize the country and the sub-region of the Horn of Africa. But he’s also left a very questionable legacy in regard to human rights, respect for the media, freedom of the press, respect for the opposition and creating political space in Ethiopia."
Fomunyoh says Meles never found the balance between the growth of commerce and the expansion of civil liberties.
"In Africa, our leaders ought to be able to realize that economic development as well as political development are mutually reinforcing," Fomunyoh added. "They are not mutually exclusive."
In a written statement, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said she admired Meles' commitment to expanding education and health services. She said the United States is confident Ethiopia will navigate this political transition according to its constitution.

【Team From Ukraine Wins Top Honors at Microsoft’s Imagine Cup Finals】
TEXT:This is the VOA Special English Technology Report.More than three hundred fifty students from seventy-five nations were in Sydney, Australia, last week for the Imagine Cup Finals. This is the tenth year Microsoft Corporation has organized the competition. Each year, the company invites students to use their love of technology to solve some of the world's most difficult problems. Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard welcomed the competitors.
JULIA GILLARD: "Welcome to Sydney. Congratulations on the achievements that brought you here. We look forward to seeing the fruits of your creative work this week in years to come. The world does have tough problems. We are fortunate to have people like you who have a passion to solve them. Enjoy the Imagine Cup!"
Microsoft's Dan'l Lewin also spoke at the opening ceremony.
DAN'L LEWIN: "Programs like the Imagine Cup and the DreamSpark program that you've all participated in are the foundation upon which young entrepreneurs, students like yourselves with big dreams, can make a difference in the world."
This year, more than two hundred fifty thousand students registered for the Imagine Cup. One hundred six teams were invited to the finals. Pip Marlow is with Microsoft Australia. She was especially pleased at the number of women competing.
PIP MARLOW: "That's why I was thrilled to hear that twenty percent of you in the competition this year are women. And so forget being the next Bill Gates, you could be the next Belinda Gates. So, I'm excited to see that represented today."
Microsoft announced the winning teams last Tuesday at its World Festival and Awards Ceremony. A team from the Ukraine won the Imagine Cup's top honor.
"It is with great pleasure and honor, the first place winner in the Software Design Category goes to team quadSquad from Ukraine."
The team's EnableTalk software program helps people who are totally or partially unable to hear. It changes sign language hand movements into speech. This is done using special gloves and a smartphone application. The gloves capture the sign language hand movements and send them to a smartphone equipped with a special app. The app compares those images to stored hand language signs and plays the words represented by the signs. The quadSquad team will receive twenty-five thousand dollars to support development of its idea.
A team from Drexel University in the United States won first place in the Game Design for Phone competition. The Drexel Dragons designed a game to help students better understand mathematics.
And Team TANG Thai from Thailand won first place in the Game Design: Xbox/Windows competition. The team designed a game that helps teach young people about the world's deforestation problem.
