Just a thatched cottage on top

Of the four-leagued straight-up hill.

No servant appears at the knock,

Little furniture his room does fill.

He must have gone fishing in stream,

If not carting his own firewood.

Having crossed, we fail to meet,

How I miss him and sadly brood.

The grass is green in the new rain,

Beyond the hut the pine trees sough.

The perfect quietude soothes

And clears up my mind and brow.

Though hospitality there isn’t,

A sense of communion has pervaded.

Being satisfied I leave the hill,

The need to wait for him has faded.
