Conversation One

M:This food is terrible! I can't evenfinish my dinner.

W: I know. You think with all the money wepaid for room and board, the university could have

better food service. Where are you headednext?

M: I'm going over to the student recreationcenter to play some bridge.

W:You’re spending your time on a card game?

M:Not just any card game. It's one of themost strategic games.

W:So I’ve heard. Don't you play with apartner?

M:Yeah! Four people play, two against theother two.

W: So, you try to play in cooperation withyour partner?

M: Actually, the cards of one of the fourplays are turned face up. That player is called the dummy.

W: I wouldn't want to be called that. Whenyou are the dummy, what do you do while the cards are being played?

M: Anything you want. Sit there and study,shuffle another deck, get snacks for everyone… I like to stand behind mypartner and watch.

W: You know, I've heard that bridge ishabit forming. You should be careful not to play so much that you don't getyour studying done.

M: Don't worry about me. I only playThursdays after dinner, and sometimes when they need a forth player. If youlike, I could teach you.

W: Thanks, but I have a pretty heavyworkload this semester. I already spend my evenings doing things I don't reallyknow how to do yet.
