W: What are you going to have?

M: I have no idea. Could you help me withthe menu?

W: Yes, sure. These are starters, and thereare main courses and these are desserts. See?

M: What’s the alternative?

W: The alternative is to order a completedinner. For a set price you get choice of soup or juice, one dish with potatoand vegetable, salad, bread and butter and sometimes coffee and sometimesdessert.

M: And you pay the price listed next to themain course?

W: Right. Like the roast beef dinner is$7.85—plus tax and tip, of course

M: It all looks pretty expensive to me.

W: It’s not. This is only a bit moreexpensive than McDonald’s. So enjoy yourself. We’re celebrating, remember?Order anything you’d like to try; it’s all on me.

M: You are very kind.

W: Friends are friends. I cannot getpromoted often. Are you ready to order?

M: Ah, can you tell me what the Hot FudgeSundae is?

W: That’s a dessert. It’s an Englishspecially. It’s a kind of ice cream with a hot sticky sauce over the top—verysweet and fattening!

M:I don’t really like the sound of that.How come there is English food? I thought we agrees to eat American food.

W: Our country is made up of people fromall over the world, so besides collected words and phrases from every language,we’ve also absorbed recipes. We even have a lot of Chinese restaurants now.

M: Which is better, French or Chinesecuisine?

W: I’d say it’s a toss-up. I love themboth.

M: I didn’t know you were so fond offoreign foods. When my boss promotes me, I will take you a French restaurantnear my company. The food there is delicious.

W:Oh, we will have a second dinner soon.
