This is Everyday Grammar. I'm Lucija.
And I'm Kaveh. And today we'll talk about the pronouns "I" and "me."
Kaveh, this is a really important topic.
Even native English speakers get confused with this one.
The police stopped him and I.(X)
That doesn't sound right.
Well, when you are talking about yourself in the subject of the sentence, you use the subject pronoun I.
I went to the White House.
And if you have two people in the subject, it is polite to put the other person first.
My brother and I went to the White House.
I still don't get it.
OK. The confusion comes with object pronouns.
If you're talking about yourself in the object of the sentence, you have to use me.
The president waved at me.
Well, that's easy. It sounds strange to say, "The president waved at I."(X)
哦,这样就容易理解了,如果你说 "The president waved at I."(错误用法!)
Yes, but when you have two people in the object, some people say,
The president waved at my brother and I." (X)
But that's incorrect.
So the right way to say it is: "The president waved at my brother and me?"
所以正确的表达是:“The president waved at my brother and me(总统向我和我哥挥手)”吗?
That's right. It sounds wrong even to some native speakers.
But me is correct because it is the object.
If you're not sure, just take out the other object pronoun and see if it sounds right.
The president waved at me.
Yes, now add "my brother" back into the sentence.
The president waved at my brother and me.
Wow, that's a great tip. I'll remember that next time.
