Every language in the world has words that express or imitate sound.
世界上任何一种语言都有表达或模拟声音的词，
The English language has dozens of them.
英语中也有很多。
We call these words: Onomatopoeia.
我们把这类词叫做拟声词。
Onomato-what? Oh-no-mah-toh-pea-ah.
拟…什么？拟…声…词！
You're gonna have to explain.
你得解释一下，
Wait a minute… what do super heroes have to do with this?
等一下…超级英雄们和这有什么关系？
Their actions make sounds. We need words to describe these sounds.
他们的动作会发出声音，所以我们需要一些词汇来描述这些声音。
I still don't get it.

OK. What does a phone sound like? Ring.

A cat? Meow. Birds? Chirp.

So, does this only apply to telephones and animals?

No! Onomatopoeic words can be used in many different ways, even as verbs.
当然不是，拟声词用法很多，甚至可以当动词用。
A song by Todd Rundgren has some really great examples.

Really? Let's hear it.
真的吗？那我们听一下。
He says: It's sort of whack, whir, wheeze, whine, sputter, splat, squirt, scrape, beep, buzz, ring, rip, roar, and retch.
他唱到：它有点儿像重击声，呼呼声，喘气声，呜呜声，劈啪声，啪啦声，喷水声，刮擦声，嘟嘟声，嗡嗡声，玲玲声，撕裂声，吼叫声，呕吐声。
Wow! So you're telling it's like a giggle, growl, grunt, gurgle, mumble, murmur, chatter, bam, and click? Exactly.
