The women began it, of course, just as they began all the industries of the home. When the men were away on the war path or the hunting trail, the women stayed at home to take care of their children. They probably grew very hungry while they waited in their caves or huts for the hunters to come home, and doubtless they remembered the starving days when the hunters found no game. Therefore it was natural for them to dig in the earth for something to eat to keep themselves and their children alive. And these primitive women with their “digging sticks” marked the beginning of all agriculture.
In time they learned not only to find roots and grains that were good to eat but also to plant seeds and to cultivate corn, wheat, rice, oats, and barley. Then it was natural to crush the hard grains between stones just as today a boy walking in the woods, who finds a nut too hard to crack with his fingers or teeth, hunts up two stones and with them does the trick.
