LESSON 28 Llewelyn and his dog
第二十八课 卢埃林和他的狗
The spearman heard the bugle sound,
长矛步兵听到集合的号声吹响，
And cheerily smiled the morn,
快活地微笑道声早上好，
And many a brach and many a hound
一只又一只的猎犬
Attend Llewelyn's horn;
纷纷响应着声声号角。
And still he blew a louder blast,
卢埃林还在更嘹亮地吹着号角，
And gave a louder cheer, —
更大声地呼唤猎犬，——
"Come, Gelert! why art thou the last
杰乐，快来！为什么你总是
Llewelyn's horn to hear?
最后一个听到我的号角？
"Oh, where does faithful Gelert roam?
“哦，忠实的杰乐，你在哪里？
The flower of all his race!
花丛里急速奔跑！
So true, so brave! —a lamb at home,
那么真切，那么勇敢！——家里温顺的羔羊，
A lion in the chase!"
战场上追逐的雄狮！”
That day Llewelyn little loved
那天卢埃林不怎么上心地
The chase of hart or hare,
追逐鹿或兔子，
And scant and small the booty proved, —
只因他的猎狗杰乐不在身边，—
For Gelert was not there.
他的战利品才少得如此可怜。
Unpleased, Llewelyn homeward hied;
卢埃林悻悻然急急忙忙往家赶，
When, near the portal seat,
临近大门的位置，
His truant Gelert he espied,
他正好看到开小差的杰乐，
Bounding his lord to greet.
跳跃着向主人热情地打招呼。

But when he gained the castle door,
但当他走到城堡的门口时，
Aghast the chieftain stood:
这位城堡的首领惊得目瞪口呆：
The hound was smeared with drops of gore, —
猎犬的嘴唇和尖牙淌着滴滴鲜血，—
His lips and fangs ran blood!
全身血迹斑斑！
Llewelyn gazed with wild surprise; —
卢埃林惊讶万分地看着这场景；—
Unused such looks to meet,
显露出从未有过的表情，
His favourite checked his joyful guise,
爱犬的欣喜行为没有得到主人的回应，
And crouched and licked his feet.
于是它蜷缩着身子，舔着他受伤的脚。
Onward in haste Llewelyn passed,
卢埃林匆忙地继续前行，
(And on went Gelert too,)
（杰乐也紧跟其后，）
And still, where'er his eyes were cast,
与此同时，他的目光无论投向哪里，
Fresh blood-drops shocked his view!
鲜红的血滴震惊了他的视野！
O'erturned his infant's bed he found!
他看见婴儿床已经打翻！
The blood-stained cover rent,
地上是血迹斑斑的被子，
And all around the walls and ground
墙壁和地面到处
With recent blood besprent!
都沾上了新鲜的血液！
He called his child—no voice replied!
他呼唤着爱子——没有回应！
He searched, with terror wild;
他恐惧万分地四下搜寻；
Blood! blood he found on every side!
血！他发现四面八方都是血！
But nowhere found the child!
但是唯独找不到孩子！
