I smelled a smell of cooking． 我闻到了烧菜做饭的味道。

上面的两个smell分别做动词和名词，一个表示嗅（味道），一个表示味道。

I smelled something burning.我闻到东西烧焦的味道。

smell只表示能够闻到某某气味，并不等于很刻意地去闻，如果专门去闻某东西的味道就要用介词at.

She smelled at the flower.她闻闻那朵花。

smell也表示发出味道，但smell并不都代表好的味道，例如：

Your body smells,you should take a shower.你的身体发出臭味，应去洗个澡。

This fish smells.这鱼发臭了。

smell作名词可表示味道，但也包括不好的味道。

I cannot stand the big smell from the garbage.我受不了那垃圾传来的臭味。
