blurb一词指的是“印在书籍护封上为该书作广告的简介或短评”转指“大事吹捧的广告”，如报纸上的广告短文、推销商品的简短有力、生动诙谐的短文播词等。这个词是美国幽默作家Gelett Burgess（1866—1951）创造的。1907年在一次零售书高协会举办的宴会上，每位来宾的餐具旁边都摆放了一本Burgess先生的新书《你是庸俗讨厌的人吗？》（Are You a Bromide?）。当时社会上流行一种风气，即在书的护封上为作者及该书内容大吹大擂，大作广告。Burgess先生对这种作法很看不惯。为了抵制这种歪风邪气，他选了一位病态美女的照片作护封，称她为Miss Belinda Blurb，并且写是道：我衷心希望用她的照片作为评介，以结束所有的广告评介。”遗憾的是，他非但没有刹住这股歪风，反倒为人们创选了blurb这个词。
