简介

Serena connects with a new Shakespeare teacher, who has no clue about what is going to happen when she gives Blair the first B grade in her life. 2. Harold: A shoo-in. The personal letter that I wrote to Dean Berube should simply cinch it.

shoo-in: 1. A sure winner. 2. One that has a sure chance of being chosen, as for a job or other position.
cinch: sure thing; a certainty.

3. Dan: You don't have to worry either. Blair's a lock. The dean told her as much, right?

lock: absolute certainty about a situation. 和上面的shoo-in, cinch一样，都表示“稳操胜券”的意思。

4. Dan: Look, getting into Yale will change our lives. It'll give us a chance to reinvent ourselves.
Serena: Yeah, yeah, and in the meantime, at least our parents are keeping it on the down low.

keeping it on the down low: to keep something very secret; not tell another person. e.g. Alright, I'll tell you but keep it on the down low...

5. Lily: Well, now that this is all out in the open, maybe we can stop sneaking around. I mean, we've had the awkward run-in and it isn't so bad. I don't know why we thought this would be so weird.
Dan: Let's leave now.
Serena: Nice try, mom.
Rufus: Yeah, seriously, good effort.

out in the open: 事情已经公开了
sneak around: 偷偷摸摸，sneak in与sneak out一个是溜进来，一个是溜出去。
nice try: 通常用在你想要做一件事，或者说一段话，但是效果适得其反，对方就会说nice try, 意思是虽然结果是失败了，但是感谢你的尝试。

6. Lily: And I'm really feeling ready to get back to the world.
Rufus: Aren't you worried about people seeing us together so soon?
Lily: The kids know. Why shouldn't the world? And, uh, we might as well make our society debut in style.

debut: A first public appearance, as of a performer. 注意这个单词是法语过来的，所以不能用英文的发音规则来念。

bush league: also see bushleague. 1. Below good standards, not good or incorrect. 2. Amateur performance. Behavior that doesn't belong in the major leagues.
Brearley: The Brearley School is an all-girls' private school, which is located on the Upper East Side of Manhattan in New York City. It is considered as one of the most prestigious schools for girls in the United States.

8. Jack: By the way, don't be alarmed, but, uh, our stock might take a little dip today. I'm still adjusting to a learning curve.
Chuck: No, what you're doing is trying too hard. You're obviously not cut out for the job, which is why Bart never let you out of the outback.

out of place: of an inappropriate or misapplied nature
pass for: to be accepted as or believed to be

Serena: Oh, hey, don't let the city get to you.

fit in: 适应。这个单词可以用在你到了一个新的场合，工作，学校，社会，你说和别人是否合得来，是否能融入这个环境，就用这个fit in.
get to: To influence or affect, especially adversely. e.g. The noise really gets to me.

11. Headmistress: I know that patience and trust aren't necessarily your strong suits, but you'll just have to rise to the occasion, hmm?

strong suits: A quality, activity, or skill in which a person excels
rise to the occasion: 随机应变，应付自如

12. Blair: I have to say, I'm totally surprised Yale passed up the PR of accepting "it" girl Serena van der Woodsen. They have more class than I thought.

pass up: To let go by; reject
They have more class than I thought: 他们比我想象的要有品，他们比我想象的层次要高。另外classy这个单词也可以用来形容做事情做的漂亮，东西很出色，很有品味。

inflate:to enlarge or amplify unduly or improperly.其实从inflation(通货膨胀)去理解，就很容易明白用在这里就表示故意给高分，夸大分数的意思。
act out: to express (unconscious impulses, for example) in an overt manner without conscious understanding or regard for social appropriateness

Jack: You should be.
Lily: You're high and you're not thinking clearly. You need to think about the repercussions of what you're doing.

high:这是一个很容易被误用的单词，虽然中文里我们常说“昨天玩的很high”，用high来表示cheerful, exciting之类的意思，但是在口语中，其实high是表示under the influence of alcohol or drugs，指的是因为喝酒、吸毒而使人很兴奋。
repercussions: 反响，后果

20. Chuck: I heard from the board that Jack is on his way back to Sydney. You didn't press charges.
Lily: No, I just wanted him gone.

press charges (against): 提出指控，撤销指控就是drop the charge
I just wanted him gone: 我只是想要他消失，注意gone做形容词这样的用法

Carr: I think I'm getting the hang of it. Like anything else, you just have to make it work for you.

I'm getting the hang of it: 熟能生巧，to succeed in learning how to do something after practicing it. e.g. After three weeks of using this computer I think I've finally got the hang of it.
