Bankruptcy increases the risk of early death as much as heart disease, according to new research by Northwestern University.

Researchers found that people who lost 75 percent of their wealth were 50 percent more likely to die during the 20-year study -- suggesting that the shock of sudden financial hardship could lead to serious illness.
