Li Hejun, the controlling shareholder of the largest solar company, spent more than $50.1m buying additional shares in the Hong Kong listed company on the day its share price crashed last week.
In a trading session last Wednesday, nearly $19bn was wiped off the market capitalisation of Hanergy Thin Film Power in less than 30 minutes.
The fall came on the same day that Mr Li did not attend the company’s annual shareholder meeting.
Mr Li bought 54.5m shares in HTF at an average cost of HK$7.1 a share, according to filings with Hong Kong’s stock exchange. The crash reduced the value of those newly acquired shares to HK$213m ($27.5m). Trading in HTF shares was halted after the big drop and remains suspended.
HTF’s share price has enjoyed startling growth this year, increasing by 500 per cent from January 2014 to last week. It catapulted Mr Li to the top of China’s rich list and propelled HTF’s market value to at least five times its nearest competitor, First Solar of the US.
Analysts have recently questioned the company’s business model. Hanergy is heavily reliant on sales to its parent company, Hanergy Group, also owned by Mr Li. The group has a history of waiting for long periods before settling the sales booked by its subsidiary.
Two days before HTF’s shares plummeted, Mr Li pledged millions of his shares in the company as collateral to secure a $200m loan from Chinese state-owned investment manager China Huarong Asset Management, according to a Financial Times investigation.
Hanergy Group could not immediately be reached regarding Mr Li’s purchases. The company released a statement last week rejecting media reports that a default on Hanergy’s loans had triggered the sell off. “Our group’s operations are normal in all respects and we maintain a good financial position with no overdue loans,” the statement said, adding that Hanergy Group had “full confidence” in the development of Hanergy Thin Film Power Group.
Mr Li now holds a net position of 73.27 per cent of Hanergy shares, according to the Hong Kong filings. A further 7.71 per cent of his shares were pledged as collateral in a series of corporate loans involving British Island entities owned by Hanergy Group.
Hong Kong’s markets regulator has recently been investigating HTF share trading, meeting investment groups and brokers who have bought and sold stock in the company.
