Investors in the electric carmaker may be feeling slightly reassured after the Hong Kong-listed firm said reports that Warren Buffett intends to cut his stake are false.

On Thursday shares in BYD, in which highly regarded investor Warren Buffett has a 10 per cent stake, fell by as much as one half without explanation. They rose to HK$28.80 in morning trading on Friday, although that is still far short of Wednesday's close of HK$35.20.

The company said in an announcement to the HK stock exchange on Friday that it had communicated with Mr Buffett's investment company Berkshire Hathaway and that "it has no present intention to reduce shareholdings in the company," citing press articles earlier this week alleging that this was so.

BYD has had a troubled few years, delivering losses in seven out of the last 10 quarters. In a separate filing, BYD made further statements reassuring the market about its performance:

In respect of the rumor "The Company has suffered substantial exchange losses in the amount of several hundred million United States Dollars in Russia", the value of products of the Company exported to Russia is not substantial (less than 1 million United States Dollars), and such products are traded in United States Dollars, and hence there have not been substantial exchange losses incurred.

In respect of the rumor "Number of customer orders for electric bus received by the Company has significantly decreased", the development of the electric vehicle business of the Company is in normal conditions, and the number of customer orders for electric bus received by the Company has not substantially decreased. The general trend in respect of the increase in the number of customer orders for and supply of electric motors of the Company has been positive.

In respect of the rumor "Certain investors have incurred losses in margin trading of the shares in the Company and substantial fund investors have sold their shares in the Company to minimize their losses", such incidents are market behaviours of which the Board is not in a position to verify and the Board has no comments thereon.

In respect of the rumor "Mr. Warren Buffett has intended to sell a substantial amount of his shares in the Company", as at the date of this announcement, the subsidiary owned by Mr. Warren Buffett is holding 225,000,000 H shares in the Company and the Board is not aware of any incident confirming a substantial sale of shares in the Company by Mr. Warren Buffet.
