After brief meetings with Ukrainian President-elect Petro Poroshenko, Russian President Vladimir Putin says he likes what he heard about ending the violence in Ukraine.

And he has a plan in that regard. What plan this is you'd better ask not me but him. He told me about it in a few words but it's one thing to talk about it here in France and it's another thing to explain it in his own country."

Putin called for an end to Ukrainian military operations in the east, saying that a resolution will need to come between Kiev and people in the East.

I can't say for sure how it all will be implemented and how it all will be formalized - but I liked the overall intention, and if that all happens in reality then conditions will be created for developing our relations in other spheres, and in economy in particular."

Obama pays tribute to veterans in Normandy

Flanked by war veterans, U.S. President Barack Obama and his French counterpart, Francois Hollande, commemorated the Allied D-Day landings on Friday, marking the 70th anniversary of the historic military invasion. At the Normandy American Cemetery,Obama praised the bravery of the 160,000 U.S., British and Canadian troops who waded ashore to confront Nazi Germany's forces.

It was on June 6, 1944 that those troops arrived, hastening their eventual victory over the Nazis. Obama and Hollande held a moment of silence and toured one of the beaches where the battles took place. It was there in Normandy, where 90-year-old Thomas Hewlett of Liverpool landed. He was among 3,000 veterans in attendance.

At least one killed in shooting at Seattle Pacific University

At least one man is dead and three more wounded after a shooting at Seattle Pacific University in Washington state, according to hospital officials. Authorities said the lone suspect entered an academic building on the Christian college campus in the afternoon and shot four students. He then started to reload his gun, but was then disarmed by personnel from the University.The gunman, whose identity has not been released, has been taken into custody. Those nearby said they were surprised something like this would happen there.

Gaokao tale: a dream come true for twin brothers

High school seniors nationwide are gearing up for the Gaokao. The exam, which greatly determines which universities students will be able to enter, is just two days away. We bring you now a special report on two twin brothers, whose sense of sacrifice and hard work allowed them to reach their dream.
Yuan Ziwen and Yuan Zihao both study at the renowned Peking University.
Their outlook and diligence have made them role models for millions of high school students.
But the twins’ first year in high school was not easy...
Weighed down by work, their test scores wouldn’t even let them dream about the prestigious Peking University.
"Our teacher told us if we could make it into the top 100 of our grade, we’d be able to get into Nankai University," Yuan Zihao said.
Since then, the brothers began encouraging each other to study harder.
Their time was entirely reserved to studies, and they rarely left school.
"We only went to downtown Tianjin twice. I thought our lives belonged to the school," Zihao said.
Senior year was almost torture. The two brothers spent most of their time after school in a rented apartment nearby.
A nap was a luxury as the Gaokao got closer.
"If he fell asleep, I would wake him up. When we were really tired, we took 10-minute naps in turn," said Yuan Ziwen.
But three years of gruelling studies have paid off.
Their excellent results in the Gaokao brought them to the gates of Peking University.
The twin brothers have written a book of their high school days, which has encouraged millions of students working hard to get into their dream universities.
Ziwen says without this decision he and his brother made years ago, and without their family’s support, they would be nowhere close to where they are now.

June the 5th is World Environment Day. The day was established in 1972 to raise global awareness in the fight against pollution, and to protect Earth. The situation in China has however only marginally improved in the past two years.
Latest figures show, China emitted over 23 million tons of chemical oxygen demand, a measure of organic matter in waste water, and about 2.4 million tons of ammonia nitrogen into its water bodies last year. Both of the levels are about three percent lower than the previous year. The country also cut emissions of sulphur dioxide and ozone during 2013.
Minor improvements aside, the country’s water quality is not looking positive. Over half of the major rivers have experienced slight or medium level pollution. Air quality is looking even more grim. Only four percent of the cities monitored met the standards, after new air quality standards were introduced.
