Riot police stand guard in front of an air force compound. Inside Thailand's acting prime minister is meeting with the Election Commission to fix a date for a new election. The meeting however was cut short as hundreds of protesters seeking to oust the government streamed through a side entrance of the compound forcing the premier and other ministers to leave. This is the latest disruption in setting up polls that the government hopes will break six months of political stalemate. They had put off talks at another venue a day earlier because of security fears. The government sees a general election as the best way out of a crisis. But some protesters disagree.

Three people were killed and at least 21 wounded in an explosion near an anti-government protest site. It was the most serious incident in long-running protests since five people were killed and dozens wounded in clashes on February 18, when police made their most determined effort to clear demonstrators.

Fires rage in Southern California with people from 15,000 homes and businesses told to evacuate. The blaze erupted just before 11 a.m. in Carlsbad just north of San Diego. Many now are fleeing the scene.

New York Times replaces top editor in unexpected move

In a statement about the unexpected move, New York Times Publisher Arthur Sulzberger Jr, thanked Abramson but did not explain why her tenure was ending.

China’s top economic planner is to lead a reform in income distribution, approved by the State Council. The National Development and Reform Commission, or NDRC, will head an inter-ministry joint conference regime to help push forward the reform. The focus will be on studying major issues in income distribution, and drafting relevant policies. The aim is to establish a reasonable and orderly income distribution regime, and to narrow the wealth gap. Other government bodies such as the ministries of human resources, civil affairs and finance are also participating.

The Chinese economy continues to show signs of a gradual slowdown and some experts are wondering if China might be headed for a hard economic landing. The former chief economist for the U.S. Federal Reserve, David Stockton, tells CCTV that he thinks the Chinese economy will do just fine.
The Fed’s former chief economist David Stockton believes that China’s economic fundamentals are intact. Stockton says China runs certain risks such as an overheated real estate market but he holds a generally positive view of the country’s economy.
"I think the Chinese economy has indeed slowed over the course of the last year, and probably will slow a little bit further over the course of the next year or so. But I’m not anticipating a hard landing for the Chinese economy. I’m expecting a slowdown and the slowdown probably would be consistent with what the Chinese government has been aiming for," he said.
Stockton also points out that a series of recent reforms will help raising the quality and sustainability of China’s economic development.
"I think the potential for those reforms to affect a better balance of economic growth in China, one that has more dependence on consumer, and less dependent on investment, is likely to pay some dividends. I think they will be successful," he said.
"I think it will be a slow process. I don’t expect those reforms to produce an immediate or significant rebalancing in the economy. But I think they are helpful steps that are probably leading in the right direction."
Since the U.S. fed started tapering its bond buying program, some developing economies have suffered a flight of capital that has led to liquidity strains, stock market plunges, depreciated currencies and other ills.
Stockton believes, though, that China has shown greater resistance to the impact of the QE tapering, and the country’s central bank has reserved enough ammunition to guard against additional risks.
