The mystery of what's happened to Malaysian Airlines missing plane deepens with every passing day. As the hunt entered its fifth day on Wednesday there was still no hint of where flight MH370 may have gone or why. The Boeing 777-200 vanished on Saturday with 239 passengers and crew on board representing some 14 nationalities. John Brennan, director of the CIA in the United States, says nothing can be ruled out at this stage.

Vietnam said on Wednesday it was scaling back the search for the plane in its waters. Officials said they'd asked Malaysian authorities for more information about reports the aircraft had altered course after its last known contact with controllers.

Fire wrecks U.S. apartment block

There are no reports of injuries but the fire that swept through this apartment block under construction in the U.S. took a lot of fighting. The blaze burned for several hours in the Mission Bay area of San Francisco despite the efforts of about 150 fire-fighters. Officials said the blaze was more difficult to tackle because fire suppression systems had not yet been fitted inside the 360-apartment structure. The property's developers said the cause of the fire was not immediately known.

UN warns Ukraine harming Syria peace efforts

Ukraine's troubles are damaging international efforts to bring about peace in Syria. That's according to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees Antonio Guterres, who says there's a chance of huge disaster if attention is diverted from the Syrian conflict.

The crisis in Ukraine has seen tensions rise considerably between the U.S. and its allies and Russia over Moscow's seizure of the Crimea region. Guterres says he's worried the tensions between Russia and the West could worsen divides already played out at the U.N Security Council over Syria.

Crimea adopts declaration of independence from Ukraine

The parliament of the region of Crimea has adopted a declaration of independence from Ukraine.
The declaration specifies that Crimea will become an independent state if around two million residents vote in favor of joining Russia in a referendum scheduled for Sunday.
Last Thursday, the Crimean parliament voted to become part of Russia. Ukrainian authorities have dismissed the upcoming referendum as "illegal," saying it violates the country’s constitution.
On Friday, Ukrainian Parliament Speaker Alexandr Turchynov, who is also the country’s acting president, signed a decree vetoing the referendum. He also threatened to dissolve the Crimean parliament. Meanwhile some ethnic groups living in the peninsula have said they would boycott the referendum.

Members of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference have put forward nearly 6,000 proposals. The topics range from political reform, economic development, to social stability.
A major focus of the proposals focus on deepening reforms and improving people’s lives. Some CPPCC members have called for reforms to improve China’s market system, strengthen administrative system, and promote the integration of cities and rural areas. Other proposals call for educational equality, and greater medical and food safety.
Those focusing on economic development say China needs to make more efforts to encourage innovation in science and technology, promote a coordinated regional development, curb pollution, and improve living conditions in rural areas.
Meanwhile, some members are calling for the modernization of China’s governance system and capability. CPPCC members also call for more efforts to reform China’s judicial system, and fight corruption.
"The proposals focus on sustainable and sound economic development, including a new type of industrialization and urbanization, solutions to excessive production capacity, and the establishment of a social credit system," said Chen Aifei,Deputy Chief of CPPCC Proposal Group.
