The man who blew the whistle on mass spying by the U.S. National Security Agency is calling on the public to protect their privacy. Speaking via video link, former NSA contractor Edward Snowden told a packed house at the South by Southwest Interactive Festival to fight against mass surveillance.

Standoff at San Diego FBI office ends

SWAT teams responded to a standoff at an FBI office in San Diego on Sunday. A suspect jumped a security gate around 11:30 a.m. local time and demanded to speak with a federal agent. He made his way to a parking structure and climbed the roof of a building, threatening to jump. That's when he called a local newsroom from the roof to ask for camera crews.

Boston trolley derails, leaving passengers with minor injuries

Aerial news footage shows the aftermath in Boston where a trolley train derailed on Monday afternoon. Boston EMS report 10 people were taken to local hospitals with mostly minor injuries. Pictures released on the transit authority's twitter feed show the trolley off the tracks, leaning against a tunnel wall, at an underground crossing. Local media say the front of the two-car trolley derailed where two tracks intersect. Emergency crews cleared the area and the cause is under investigation.

China has sent nine vessels to join the search and rescue operation for the plane. The first Chinese rescue vessel "Tai Shun Hai" arrived at the search site at 9 a.m Sunday, and has finished its mission.
Three Chinese vessels are in operation now. Chinese coast guard vessel 3411 arrived Sunday noon. It covered a 260 square kilometre area Monday, and spotted two oil slicks. Chinese navy warship Mianyang arrived early Monday morning, and started operations upon arrival. South China Sea Rescue 115 arrived 8 p.m. Monday.
Five more Chinese vessels are on their way. They are Patrol vessel Haixun 31, rescue vessel South China Sea Rescue 101, navy warship Jinggangshan, destroyer Haikou and amphibious landing ship Kunlunshan. They will arrive at waters suspected to be the site of the missing plane later Tuesday.
Apart from efforts on the sea, China’s Xi’an satellite Monitor and control center has launched an emergency response, deploying several high-resolution satellites.

China’s largest online direct sales company, Jingdong, and Tencent, the country’s top internet company have cozied up after weeks of speculation that the two might be an item.
The two companies announced Monday that Tencent will buy a 15-percent stake in JD for more than 210 million US dollars while Jingdong will run three of Tencent’s e-commerce branches. Feng Xin examines what many are calling a "strategic partnership" between the internet giants.
Jingdong will take over Tencent’s B2C platform QQ Wanggou and C2C marketplace Paipai. It will also acquire full interest in Tencent’s logistics department as well as a small share in Icson, Tencent’s flagship online shopping mall.
From Tencent’s side, the company will offer access to Jingdong on its hugely popular social network sites, WeChat and Mobile QQ. Tencent plans to pick up an additional 5 percent of Jingdong’s stake once it goes public. Tencent President Martin Lau also will take a seat on Jingdong’s board.
"For Tencent, it has not only gotten rid of its unsuccessful e-commerce departments but also created new business opportunities for its emerging Wechat service. For Jingdong, it will get more traffic and business through Tencent’s massive mobile social network service. It’s a valuable partnership for both sides." Xiang Ligang, General Secretary of 3G Industry Associations said.
The Tencent-Jingdong partnership comes ahead of Jingdong’s planned 1.5-billion-dollar public listing in the United States,while Tencent is seeking to monetize its 600-million-user WeChat platform .
Jingdong currently controls one-fifth of China’s e-commerce market. Its competitor, Alibaba, remains the big boy on the block with a market share of more than 50%.
