Protesters in the Thai capital Bangkok have swelled to the tens of thousands for a massive anti-government demonstration. Members and supporters of the country's Democrat Party are marching through the streets to halt traffic and close government offices in an attempt to force out Prime Minister Yinkluck Shinawatra. Here a group of employees from the Ministry of Labour vacate the building. Demonstrators then chain the facility so no one can re-enter. The upheaval is the culmination of weeks of similar protests. Besides Yingluck's ouster, the demonstrators want snap elections originally set for early February to be pushed back to May. Opposition leader Abhisit Vejjajiva said both sides need to compromise to reach a solution.

Right now, whatever they (the government) have planned is not working anymore. Every side should turn to each other and find the legal and constitutional way out. All sides could choose a way out that will avoid confrontation and is still in line with the constitution, as well as put reforms in place and an election that everyone can agree upon."

Iran nuclear deal to take effect on January 20

Officials say the first step to a nuclear deal between Iran and six major powers will come into effect on January 20. The Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister made the announcement on television:

The Charge d'Affaires of the Chinese Embassy in Spain has criticized Japanese Foreign Minister Fumio Kishida for his comments defending Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's visit to the war-linked Yasukuni Shrine. Kishida said in an interview with Spanish newspaper El Pais, that the shrine not only honors those who died during World War Two, but also honors Japanese martyrs who fought for Japan since 1853.
Huang Yazhong refuted in an article published on the website of the Chinese Embassy to Spain, that 95 percent of the 2.5 million enshrined in Yasukuni died during Japan’s "unjust war" invading neighbouring countries, including 14 Class A war criminals. Huang also said China and Japan have had a friendly relationship in the past.
But the precondition of friendship was that Japan must face history and apologize to its neighbours. He said it was Abe who took Japan on a big step backward on this issue, which outraged people from China and other victim countries.

America’s Motor City is getting ready to host the North American International Auto Show, or you might know it better as the Detroit Auto Show. It will be Detroit’s first major event since the city filed for bankruptcy, the largest municipal bankruptcy in U.S. history.
