French riding enthusiasts took to the streets of Paris in protest over a planned sales tax rise they say will lead to the slaughter of thousands of horses and ponies. They say the tax hike from seven to 20 per cent will force the closure of 2,000 riding centres. They're predicting the loss of thousands of jobs and certain death for the animals whose livelihoods depend on the centres.

The protest was the latest in a wave across France over the past two months in a backlash against taxation, poor economic growth and unemployment. Those and a series of other issues like immigration have sent the popularity rating of President Francois Hollande to a record low.

All across Israel, it's the story everyone is reading about. An historic nuclear agreement between global powers and Iran. But while others rejoice, some Israelis are not optimistic.

Turkey supplier John Burkel is pleased his prized poultry will then enjoy a life of leisure.

The so-called shengnyu, or "leftover women", this rather insulting word was coined six years ago, referring to single, urban and educated women over the age of 27. This group of women faces intense pressure to marry, but many of them find it hard to find someone they really want to spend the rest of their lives with.
Leftover women, professional single females in their late twenties. It’s become a buzz word in China. And this group of women is growing rapidly in the cities. They’re facing an unprecedented "unmarried crisis".
Many of them spent time on their education and personal career development to prove their personal value in modern society.
But when they finally start the search for Mr. Right, the problems begin.
“I would like to date a guy who is a bit older than me, maybe in his early thirties, but a lot of them are already in a stable relationship. The choices left for me are really limited.” Sales manager Yang Xiting said.
Added to that, many Chinese men haven’t caught up with the times and only want to marry a younger woman.
According to a major national survey in 2010, nine out of 10 men in China think women should get married before they’re 27.
The increasingly competitive society requires much more from a professional woman than before.
“We are the women in the modern age who have had good education. But the development of society hasn’t kept up with us, so we became the "leftover girls", a group sacrificed in this contradictory age.” Yang said.
Many men, stuck in their old ideas, say the more successful women are, the harder it is for them to find a partner.
“We all say men and women are equal. Many women nowadays are working jobs that used to be restricted to guys. They are all great women, but the excellent get left over.”
One expert says the environment in which these women grew up might have also contributed to their single status as well.
“Most of these so-called leftover women were the only children in their family. They had no siblings and were alone growing up. So psychologically they are used to being alone and sometimes self-centered.” Sociologist Zhou Xiaozheng said.
Despite social pressure, most of these women don’t want to be pushed into the wrong marriage.
“If I get married, I don’t want it to be a result of social or family pressure. The only reason to get married is love.” Company employee Cao Yue said.
Experts also say being single is an individual choice.
A civilized society should be more tolerant and give more freedom to people to choose their own lifestyles.

Shipping containers from China are getting a high-tech transformation to become en-suite studio apartments. A youth organization in London has won permission to create two small communities of converted shipping containers.
It doesn't look much for the outside, painted shipping containers stacked on top of each other. But these are the product of three years of research and testing, a simple but high-tech home for 1 person.
They are the brainchild of one man.
"The price of accommodation in this part of London means you can't afford it if you're on minimum wage. And there isn't anything between. And so it was trying to find something that would bridge that gap, that would be a stepping stone between living in a hostel and getting into the private rented sector," Christopher Pain, YMCA Walthamstow Forest, says.
550 young people come through the doors of the YMCA in Walthamstow each year, needing help, support and accommodation. But once ready to start work, their experience finding accommodation to rent can be a shock.
Private rentals in the capital are soaring, up almost 5% year on year -and now stand at an average 1800 dollars a month.
The mYpads have been designed with low energy costs and are to be rented out at around 100 US dollars a week.
Young people being helped by the YMCA are impressed with the mYpads.
"I think it's amazing. It's got everything you needing here. It's warm. It's comfortable, you've got a TV, you've got a cooker you've got a fridge, you've got your shower room, you've got everything really. So I think they're amazing. Maybe from the outside you may think yeah, it's a shipping container but when you’re inside you just feel like you're in a nice hotel room. There's a TV, a shower room, fridge, it's amazing. When inside you feel like it's a nice hotel room, or a nice living quarters, you wouldn't think it was a shipping container," former YMCA resident Louise Stephenson says.
But not everyone is so welcoming. The council which has approved plans for two developments consisting of 10 and 20 MYpads is wary of the scheme.
The council says it will watch the progress of the Mypads developments with interest but has expressed caution. An official says the council did not see the use of shipping crates as the answer for the 21,000 people needing accommodation in this London borough.
"I fully accept that shipping containers like these are not the long-term solution, but we face a crisis at the moment that's on a parallel with after the Second World War," Pain says.
And it's a solution that is prompting great interest not only from London's other boroughs which face similar housing needs, but internationally, raising the prospect that this experiment in east London, could one day be seen further afield.
