世间万物的存在，必定有其存在的价值和意义，每一个事物的产生必定有其产生的根源，并非凭空而降。

魏晋时代，富贵人家喜欢斗有钱斗奢华。当时有七月七日晒衣习俗，贫寒的名士阮咸见达官贵人都趁这机会炫耀纱罗锦绮，于是以“未能免俗”为名，用竹竿挑一短裤在院子里晒，“人或怪之”（《世说新语·任诞》）。他们感到奇怪是很自然的事:家无锦衣这样的“丑事”，一般人是不会外扬的。

在英国，“人或怪之”的会是wash one's dirty linen in public.按linen是亚麻布造的衣物，“当众洗骯脏衣物”，对英国人来说，等于家丑外扬了。
