A young man appeared in the garden. He looked about twenty-four,and was tall and dark, with full red lips and a black moustache curled at the ends.

‘Well,my beauty,what can I do for you?’he said, looking interestedly at her.‘I'm Mr d’Urberville.’

It needed all Tess's courage to reply.‘I came to see your mother, sir.’

‘I'm afraid you can't see her. She's ill. What do you want to see her about?’

‘I…I…it seems so foolish!’

‘Never mind,’said he kindly.‘I like foolish things.Try again,my dear.’

‘I came, sir, to tell you we are of the same family as you.’

‘Aha! Poor relations?’

‘Yes.’

‘Stokes?’

‘No,d’Urbervilles.’

‘Oh yes,of course,I mean d’Urbervilles.’

‘We have several proofs that we are d’Urbervilles. We have an old silver spoon and a seal at home. But mother uses the spoon to stir the soup.

Mother said we ought to tell you, as we are the oldest branch of the family and we've lost our horse in an accident.’

‘Very kind of your mother,’ said Alec d’Urberville, ‘and I certainly don't regret it.”He looked admiringly at Tess, whose face blushed a deep pink.

‘And so you've come on a friendly visit?’

‘I suppose I have,’ murmured Tess, looking uncomfortable.

He ought to have kept his promise.

2. look at:朝.....

Come by one day and look at some of the other dogs.

Don' t look at the dark side of things.

Look at it logically.

I look at this problem from a different viewpoint.

3. never mind:

Never mind what he said, I want your opinion.

Never mind what he says, let's see what he does.

Never mind, I'll do it myself.

Never mind, my poor child, you father will calm down.

4. at home:

All the next day he remained at home.

He stays at home on sick leave.

5. in an accident:

He was killed in an accident in the first flush of manhood.

He lost a leg in an accident, but his wife loved him just the same.

6. come on a visit:来访

讲解:短语中的动词还可以用go,go on a visit意思是“去玩”,come on a visit是来玩。

I am going on a visit to the seaside this summer.

He came on a evil visit, lending money.

7. kind of sb:

It's very kind of you to take the trouble to help me.

It is kind of you to take me to the station.

8. in the garden:

There was a pond in the garden in which a fountain played.

Many children played at hide and seek in the garden.

9. see sb about something:

The director wants to see me about the mistake I made, I'd better go and brave it out.

Is there something you want to see me about?

What is it you want to see me about?

1. a black moustache:

2. at the ends:

3. all one’s courage:

4. poor relations:

5. an old silver spoon:

An silver old spoon是错误的。

6. full red lips:

1. about twenty-four:

3. use the spoon to stir the soup:

4. the oldest branch of the family:

5. lose our horse:

1.He looked about twenty-four,and was tall and dark, with full red lips and a black moustache curled at the ends.

【点拨】with full red lips and a black moustache curled at the ends是介词短语做伴随状况状语。

2. “Well,my beauty, what can I do for you?” he said, looking interestedly at her.

4. I'm afraid you can't see her. She's ill.

【点拨】you can't see her.

3. I came, sir, to tell you we are of the same family as you.

Now it's done, regrets are of no avail.

They attach importance to things that are of no consequence.

【点拨3】the same+名词+as...

4. We have several proofs that we are d’Urbervilles.

【点拨】that we are d’Urbervilles是同位语从句,同位词是proofs,从句补充说明proofs是那些,是什么。

5. He looked admiringly at Tess, whose face blushed a deep pink.

6. “I suppose I have,” murmured Tess, looking uncomfortable.
