People and Plants
People use plants in many ways.
For food.There are about eighty thousand (80,000!)
different plants in the worldthat people can eat.
But half of the world's food comes from only three

Plants:rice,corn and wheat.
For shelter.We use wood from trees to build houses and

furniture.
Tables,chairs and beds are furniture.
So is your desk.For medicine.
We make many medicines from plants.What's medicine?
Doctors use medicine to help sick people.For clothing.
Is your shirt made of cotton Cotton is made from the cotton

plant.
Do you have a hat made of straw?
Straw hats are made from the stems of grass plants.
For things we use to work.
Look at the things on your desk.
Books,paper,pencils,erasersand the ink in your pen all come

from plants.
To make food taste better.
Some plants make food taste better.
Ginger,chocolate and cinnamon all come from plants.Ginger is a

root.
Chocolate is made from the seeds of the cacao plant.
Cinnamon is made from the bark of a tree.
