片语"to go the extra mile"源出《圣经·马太福音》第五章“山顶布道”。耶稣劝告门徒："Whosoever shall compel thee to go a mile, go with him twain."（有人强逼你走一里路，你就同他走二里。）当时，以色列人被罗马统治，只要罗马士兵下令，以色列人就必须给罗马人抬着东西走一英里。针对这种情况，耶稣发表了上述言语，劝诫众人要忍辱、行善，甚至是用爱来回应敌人的恨。

如今，"to go the extra mile"的宗教意义已渐行渐远。现常用来形容“除了份内活儿，还干额外的事。” 看下面两个例句：
