The word “si xiang jia” is a homonym with "thinker" in Chinese and means literally a "person of private enjoyment." But it actually refers to people who pursue health, leisure and an independent lifestyle.

They have their own ideas, pick their own place to stay and share leisure time with family and friends, but always keep some time for their own. They also tend to maintain a place of privacy in their heart and try to "privatize" their enjoyment.

大家对IQ(intelligence quotient智商)和EQ(emotion quotient 情商)这两个词一定不陌生吧?

Social quotient (SQ), first put forward by US scholar Daniel Goleman, refers to the ability to deal with social relations and follows in the style of the IQ (intelligence quotient) and EQ (emotion quotient) concepts. Goleman believes that interpersonal interaction exerts its great influence on our intelligence and other aspects of our lives.

Unlike IQ, which seems to be fixed after age five, all of us can work on skills like smiling or a positive attitude, traits commonly found in individuals with high social skills. Shy and extroverted people can similarly benefit from such efforts.

Rainbow is seen as colorful and cheerful. So, rainbow clan refers to people who are good at finding a balance between work and life. They have a balanced and healthy diet, do physical exercises regularly, get enough sleep, and work with high efficiency,.

“Never make yourself a slave to wealth, enjoy every minute of your life” is their motto. In their eyes, career advancement and wealth accumulation coming from overtime working and bad health is just like pursuing one of the seven colors from a rainbow, it’s by no means a worthwhile way of life.

A goof in film making is an error made during film production which finds its way into the final released picture. Depending upon the film and the actual scene, the goof may have different effects: a loss in realism, an annoyance, or it could just be funny. It is often a type of continuity error. Goofs are also known as "bloopers" or "mistakes".

There are several types of goofs, for example:

Somebody or something from the film crew is in the picture that wasn't planned (e.g., camera and cameraman is reflected in a mirror).

Chronological or conditional errors (e.g. a cigarette getting longer with the next scene).

Historical inaccuracies and anachronisms (e.g., an HDTV set in a film set in the 1970s).

Geographic: an object or landmark reveals the scene was filmed in a different city than the city it is set. This is very common in Hollywood films that are shot in Canada.

Problems in audio or soundtrack (e.g. a person's lips carry on moving after they have finished speaking).

Intertitles displaying wrong words (e.g. a character called "John" may have his name misspelled Jhon in the subtitles by accident).

Living Apart Together (LAT) is a term for couples who, while committed to each other, decide to have separate homes rather than one shared residence.

There are three approaches LAT couples can take, concerning decision to keep separate domestic residences. The majority are the "gladly apart", along with the "regretfully apart" (due to work commitments, family responsibilities, legal or residency requirements, or other reasons) and the "undecidedly apart" (committed but not especially moving towards cohabitation at the time).

Those gladly apart couples claim that their motives include:

LAT having "kept their relationship fresh".

Having both an intimate relationship and one's own space is a treat.

The anticipation of time together always being special.

Having bases in two cultures – for example both a busy city and a country village.

Freedom to do things without consultation, and the freedom not to do things in one's own abode.

Independent finances and homes meaning that financial dispute and negotiation is not a source of friction in the couple's relationship.

Ability to focus on work or one's own activities without interruption at times when one wishes to work.

Science geek refers to a group of highly intelligent men who majored in science and technology. They boast extensive scientific knowledge, love high-tech inventions and challenging computer games, and are curious about life. However, they may lack some common sense in regular relationship with other people.

The heroes in the American TV drama "The Big Bang Theory" might be the most typical representatives of this group. They play 3D chess, create Row-Sham-Bow that is much more difficult than the normal one,and do various experiments that are totally unknown to the world.

Cyber model, or ma dou in Chinese, is an emerging occupation amid a boom in the country's online shopping. Cyber models do not strut the catwalk. They pose for pictures that get posted online for stores to showcase their products.

To become a cyber model, you don't necessarily have to be tall and thin with long legs like the professionals. Having a pretty face and being able to pose vivaciously like a “girl next door” are most important.

The models are mostly college students or white-collar workers, whose employers are mainly small online clothing stores operating on a shoestring budget.

ROM brain refers to a person who refuses to accept input and ideas from other people. It may also be someone who spews ideas and opinions but can't seem to accept input from the outside world.

This idea stems from the computer term ROM (commonly known as read-only memory), a storage media where data cannot be modified, at least not very quickly or easily.

For example:

He is not willing to take in any new ideas. A ROM brain indeed.

A common slang term for visually appealing persons or effects used to draw mass attention is eye candy. The implication is that they are eye-catching in a superficial fashion. Like actual "candy", this addition is seen to be neither nutritious nor substantial, but rather provides a potentially addictive appeal which will sustain the attention of a wider audience, possibly despite their better nature.

The term may have been originated by interactive videodisc, user interface designers working at INTERAC Corp. in 1983. Their work integrated text, audio, graphics, photographic images, and video into a seamless presentation. The "eye candy" referred to visually appealing images supporting the overall message.

The term is also used to refer to actors or actresses perceived to have been cast primarily for the visual enjoyment of the audience. Various novels, articles, and stories have used this slang term to show a physical attraction one person has toward another.

Eye candy

What’s a DINKWAD? A DINKWAD is an acronym which stands for “double income, no kids, with a dog”. It’s an extension of a DINK (double income, no kids), not to be confused with a DINKY (double income, no kids yet) or a DINKEM (double income, no kids, excessive mortgage).

For example:

I'm one half of a DINK but I secretly wish to be a DINKWAD.

The term "Pink Power" was born in a fierce online debate among netizens from the post-1970s, post-1980s and post-1990s generations.

During the debate, in response to the "Red Generation" which the post-1970s and post-1980s call themselves, the post-1990s generation brought forward the concept of "Pink Power", which means that although the post-1990s generation is still young, they will surely grow up and shoulder their social responsibility, ultimately the "Pink Power" will turn into "Red Power" whereby they will become the backbone of the country.

Once post online, the term won hearts of the post-1990s immediately and was considered as a favorite label for them.

The term “gao ya xian” in Chinese means literally a high-voltage line which is connected with the danger of electric shock by contact or proximity. But in daily conversation, it is often used to refer to top prohibitions, rules that one should never break, because it will prove to be as lethal as touching the high-tension wire.

For example:

When you are in a new company, the first thing you should do is to determine the top prohibitions there, something you should never touch.

The phrase “online security guard”, which literally means “white clan” in Chinese, is the opposite of “black clan” or hacker. It refers to professionals who fight hackers in order to protect people’s information security in the online world. It’s not unusual that some of the online security guards are former hackers.

For example:

I know an online security guard who used to work for the military, he can break into any computer in 10 minutes.

Group interviews involve getting a group of job candidates together to meet with one or more interviewers. Candidates may be required to participate in work-simulation exercises. These can take the form of group problem-solving sessions where each candidate's contributions and participation is noted.

The skills been observed include communication and interpersonal ability, persuasiveness and the ability to influence others, leadership and delegation, organizational and planning skills and the ability to work and contribute as a team-member.

This term “nao can ti”, meaning literally “brain-impaired writing style,” is the Chinese answer to “leetspeak” in English. It’s a language used by some netizens who mix traditional and simplified Chinese characters with symbols, numbers and alphabets. It is so hard to read that it looks like the writing of a mentally impaired person.

This language is quite popular among young netizens who on one hand would like to show their independent personality, on the other hand, want to keep some privacy from their teachers and parents.
