1.consume v．消费，耗尽；烧毁；吃光，饮尽
【记】词根记忆：con（表加强）+sum (取)+e--全部取走--耗尽
【例】They were reported to have destroyed 800 homes and consumed about 120,000 hectares of land.
据报道，他们毁坏了800所房子，烧毁了12万公顷的田地。（2005听力）
We consumed 5 bottles of beer at dinner.
我们晚饭时喝光了5瓶啤酒。

2.abandon vt．抛弃，放弃；离弃（家园、船只、飞机等）；遗弃（妻、子女等）
【例】To support his family better, Adam abandoned his dreams.
为了更好地养家糊口，亚当放弃了自己的梦想。
【辨】abandon, surrender, resign，abandon主要指最终完全放弃，尤指放弃无形的东西，如：I abandoned the hope of being a doctor.；surrender是指经过斗争或抵抗后被迫放弃、投降，如：The captain had to surrender to the enemy; resign是自愿放弃或没有经过斗争而作出牺牲，如：Peter decided to resign.

3.lodge n.小屋 v．暂住，留宿；卡住；正式提出；存放，寄存
【例】The families lodged the children with relatives after the flood.
家人们在水灾过后把孩子们送到亲戚家去。

4.lounge n.休息室 v．懒洋洋地靠坐着；闲逛，混时间
【例】The animals in the zoo lounge in their cages in summer.
夏天，动物园里的动物们懒洋洋地躺在笼子里。

5.intensify v．加强，增强，加剧
【记】词根记忆：in(使)+tens(伸展)+ify--使不断伸展--加强
【例】The press has intensified its scrutiny of the matter.
新闻界已加强了对该事件的审查。

6.supervise v.监督，管理，指导
【记】词根记忆：super(上)+vis(看)+e--从上往下看--监督
【例】The chief clerk supervises the work of the department.
组长负责监督该部门的工作。
Once supervised by teachers and principals，they now appear to be ”self care”．
他们曾经受老师和校长的监督，现在看起来已是“自我关照”了。(2007)

7.conclude v．结束；推断出，断定
【记】词根记忆：con(共同)+clud(关闭)+e--全部关闭--结束
【例】The latest survey concludes that the extent and type of hospital teaching available differ a great deal across the country.
最新的调查显示医院教学的程度和类型在全国范围内存在很大差异。(1999)
The professor concluded that noise will annoy people.

【派】conclusion (n.结束；结尾；结论，推论；(条约等的)缔结]；conclusive(adj.结论性的；确定的；决定性的)
【辨】conclude, infer, deduce, conclude指经过对已知事实的思考得出结论；infer指根据事实以某事中得出结论，常含有证据不充分的意思，如：What can we infer from the facts?；deduce指根据充分证据或从一般原则进行逻辑推理而推出，如：The method was deduced from experiments.

8.tangle v．（使某物）乱作一团；（使）纠缠，（使）混乱见乱七八槽的一堆；混乱
【例】Soplua's hair got all tangled up in the barbed wire fence.
索菲娅的头发被带刺的钢丝篱笆挂住了。
We made a way through a tangle of branches.
我们从纠缠在一起的树枝间开辟出一条路来。
【用】词组tangle with表示“与…争吵”的意思。
