1.oppress vt．压迫，压制；压抑，使烦恼
【记】词根记忆：op+press(压)--压下去--压迫，压制
【例】The city-dweller who leaves for the country is often oppressed by a sense of unbearable stillness and quiet.

2.loss n．遗失，丧失;失败，输掉；损失，亏损

3.disclaim v．否认，拒绝承认；放弃
【记】词根记忆：dis(不)+claim(呼喊)--不再呼喊--放弃
【例】Tony insisted disclaiming what he said yesterday.
托尼坚持否认昨天说过的话。
【用】disclaim指法律上正式放弃某种权利。

4.scan v．审视，扫描；浏览；（指诗句）符合韵律 n．审视，扫描
【记】发音记忆：四看--四处看--审视，扫描
【例】The policeman scanned the theater to make sure the suspect was not in it．

【辨】vanish, disappear二者都有“消失”的意思。vanish指突然地或神秘地消失不见，不留任何痕迹；disappear是一般用语，泛指消失，不限定时间长短。

Jefferson finally buckled under the excessive demands of the job.
杰斐逊最终被过量的工作压垮了。
【用】表屈服时，buckle强调由于精疲力竭而屈服，与give up稍有不同。
