1.contaminate v．污染，玷污
【例】Water was contaminated by the chemicals.水被化学物质污染了。
【派】contemptuous(adj.表示轻蔑的，藐视的)

2.perplex vt.使困惑，难住；使复杂化
【记】词根记忆：per+plex(重叠)--重叠在一起--使困惑
【例】The mayor's speech perplexed the issue.
市长的讲话使这一问题变复杂了。

3.improve v.改进，提高，改善；增值：利用（机会等）
【例】We have even more time to improve our characters and to grow into a mature person.
我们甚至有更多的时间来完善自身性格，使自己成长为一个成熟的人。( 1997)
【派】improvement(n．改善，增进；增值；利用)
【辨】improve，better二者都含有“改进．改善”的意思，有时可通用。improve用途较广，表示在价值或状态上改善，如：improve the health; better指提高地位、条件等外在东西，如：better the living conditions。

4.differ vi．相异，有区别；持不同看法
【记】词根记忆：dif(分开)+f打(带来)--分别带来--有区别
【例】The latest survey concludes that the extent and type of hospital teaching available differ a great deal across the country.
最新的调查显示，医院教学的程度和类型在全国范围内存在很大差异。(1999)

5.overdo v．做（使用）…过度，把…煮太久
【例】The tragic scenes in the movie were a bit overdone.

6.soothe v．使平静，安慰;使（痛苦、疼痛）缓和或减轻
【例】We did not know how to soothe the bereaved mother.
我们不知如何安慰那位丧子的母亲。
A bit of embrocation will soothe your bruised knee.

7.enlarge v．扩大，放大（照片），扩展
【记】联想记忆：en(使)+large(大的)--扩大，放大
【例】My one object in following a new course is to enlarge the range of my studies in the art of writing fiction.

8.declare v.宣告，公告；表明，断言；申报（纳税品等）

【例】More ambitious is the Ka Lahui group, which declared itself a new nation in 1987 and wants full, official independence from the US.
