Nadal,Murray Ease Through First Round at Wimbledon

Rafael Nadal of Spain has started his title defense at the Wimbledon Championships with an easy victory. Whilst Britain's favorite Andy Murray also made it through to the second round.

With all the latest action from the first day, our London Correspondent Tu Yun has more.

It was a thrilling first day at Wimbledon, with predictable results but still plenty of drama at at the All England Club.

All home crowds begun pinning all thier hopes into Andy Murray once again. The world No.4 gave British hopes a brief speed bump when he dropped the opening set to Daniel Gimeno-Traver under the Centre Court roof. But the two-time semi-finalist rallied spectacularly, coming back to see off the Spaniard 4-6, 6-3, 6-0, 6-0.

Almost echoing his impresive through the legs shot at Queens, his last point was equally impressive with Murray hitting a backhand winner at full stretch while well beyond the tramlines.

"The roof changes the conditions. It's not the same conditions. It's different. And if anything, it's like almost too perfect. There is no wind, obviously no sun, no elements to contend with. It's different grass court tennis. But it was a good match and good atmosphere there, too."

The drama and excitement on Centre court from Murray was preluded by World Number 1 and defending champion Radael Nadal, who successfully completed his first ever title-defending match at Wimbledon.

"It was a very, very exciting feeling. Fantastic to see the court in really, really perfect conditions. So yes, very very happy for everything."

In his predictable strong form, Nadal came through in straight sets against Michael "Mussell" Russell. Rafa had missed out on the chance to open Centre Court, in 2009, but relished the chance to do so today.

In the women's draw, high-ranking players, including Francesca Schiavone of Italy and Svetlana Kuznetsova of Russia, all advanced.

But it was an early night for 17th Seed Kaia Kanepi, who shocked fans by reaching last year's quarter-finals as a qualifier. Kanepi lost to Italian Sara Errani in straight sets, 1-6, 4-6 becoming the highest seed to exit in the first round.

The rain led to the cancellation of at least 10 matches, which are rescheduled on Tuesday.
