China's southern resort city Sanya remains closed off following a wave of COVID-19 infections driven by the new Omicron strain. Local authorities say they have placed all stranded tourists in hotels, and have taken a range of measures to battle the crisis. Some 3,000 tourists were stranded at the airport on Saturday when the closure began. Officials say all of them have now been placed in hotels.

Sanya continues to test hundreds of thousands of people each day – a key measure to detect the highly-transmissible Omicron strain and also to allow healthy visitors to leave. Over the weekend, contact tracing teams have been reaching out to people who have traveled to Hainan since July 23. They've been told to get two PCR tests within a 72-hour period. Officials say infection numbers are still 'on the rise' and are urging people to take necessary precautions.
