and in this lesson, I'm going to show you the difference between two commonly confused words which are during and while
本节课，我要为你们讲一下两个易混淆词汇during和while的区别
Okay now both of these words are used to refer to activities that are happening while something else is happening or happened
好吧，这两个词汇都可以用来指正在发生的活动，此时，其他事情也正在发生
and that's why it's easy to get them mixed up
这也就是人们很容易混淆这两个词汇的原因
but actually when we use them grammatically they're quite different,
但实际上，使用这两个词汇的语法是完全不同的
so let me show you what that difference is

so from the point of view of grammar
从语法的角度来看
first of all for those of you who care about grammar
对于你们这些关注语法的人来说，首先
during is a preposition
during是介词
and the word while is a conjunction
while是连词
okay，all right

now let's see what that means in effect when we use the word in a sentence
现在，我们来看看当我们在句子中使用这两个词汇时，它们的实际意思是什么
so we would say for example
所以比如说
some people were talking during the movie
有些人会在看电影的时候讲话
so we are using during plus a noun
在这里，我们用during加上一个名词
okay
对吧
That's the key

after during we use a noun
during后面我们用一个名词
after while we need to use there are，two possibilities，subject and verb
在while后面加的东西有两种可能，我们可以加上主语和动词
or we use while plus a gerund
或者while后面加上动名词
what is a gerund
动名词是什么
a gerund is a verb in the ing form
动名词是动词的ing形式
such as running，talking，teaching
比如说running（跑步）、talking（谈话）、teaching（教）

so during plus a noun
所以during加一个名词
while plus the subject and verb
while加主语和动词
or while plus a gerund
或者while加动名词
alright let's go step by step
好的，我们一步步进行
so some people were talking during the movie
所有有些人在看电影的时候讲话，
right
对吧
movie is a noun
电影是名词
or if we wanted to express the same thing using while
如果我们想要使用while来表达同样的事情，
we would say some people were talking while we were watching the movie
我们可以说，在我们看电影的时候，有些人在讲话
okay
对吧
the while part of the sentence can go at the beginning
while在句子中可以位于句首，

or it can go in the middle
也可以位于句中
that's okay
都可以
so we could also say
所以我们也可以说
while we were watching the movie comma some people were talking
我们在看电影时候，有些人在讲话中
period，okay
暂时讲到这为止，好吗
but here you saw while plus subject plus verb
看这里，while加上主语加上动词
now because while suggest something is continuing
因为while表示某件事情正在进行
very often we will see here a continuous form of the verb
所以我们经常会看到动词会用进行时
okay
好了
a continuous tense present continuous，past continuous and so on
进行时有现在进行时、过去进行时等
okay

but you could also shorten it a little bit
你也可以使这句话变得简洁一点
and you could say while plus the gerund
你可以表示while加上动名词
for example
比如说
while watching the movie comma some people were talking
看电影的时候，一些人在讲话
or some people were talking while watching the movie
或者有些人在讲话，在看电影的时候
here this verb watching becomes a gerund okay
这里的动词watching是动名词，对吧
now let's look at some more examples
我们现在来看一些例子
the best way to understand something is not just from the theory but from the practice

so we stayed indoors during the snowstorm

the snowstorm is a noun，right
暴风雪是名词，对吧
so we could also say during the snowstorm comma we stayed indoors
所以我们可以说下暴风雪时，我们呆在室内
indoors means inside
indoors的意思是在里面
or while it was snowing comma we stayed indoors okay
或者说，下雪时，我们呆在室内，对吧
so here we have while plus the subject plus the verb
这句话中，我们用while加上主语加上动词

或者他在进行面试的时候非常自信，对吧
or if we want to go with while plus the gerund
或者如果我们想用while加上动名词的形式
we would just say while being interviewed , he felt quite confident okay
我们可以说面试的时候，他非常自信
alright so that's the main thing during plus a noun okay
好的，所以关键是during加上名词
and while plus subject and verb or while plus a gerund
while加上主语和动词，或者while加上动名词
