In our conversation, Kaveh used the word But as a conjunction.

It appeared at the beginning of the sentence and indicated disagreement.

This is the usual use of But in everyday conversation.

Starting a sentence with But indicates a disagreement is stronger and more forceful than usual.

Here is another example of the usual use of But.

Hey! Nice scarf. I really like it.

But you told me last week you didn't like it.

As you can see, I disagree with Kaveh.

When I use the word But, it shows that I have strong feelings about the scarf.
当我用But时，表明我对围巾有强烈的感觉。

I hope this makes sense, because there are other ways to use But.

You can start a sentence with an agreeable word, like Yeah, to reduce the force of your statement.

This way of disagreeing sounds softer and sets a more relaxed tone.

Let's demonstrate that again:

Yeah, But you told me last week you didn't like it.

That sounds much softer. Here's another example:

Social customs and grammar play a role in deciding when and how to use But.
