Italian Prime Minster Enrico Letta is being asked to stand down. He's being blamed by the Democratic Party -- the latest in the ruling coalition -- for failing to pull Italy out of it's economic slump. He had come under fire for the slow pace of economic reforms in the country, after being appointed in April 2013 to lead the cross-party coalition. The Party overwhelmingly supported a call by its its 39-year-old center-left leader Matteo Renzi by a vote of 136 votes to 16. Democratic Party Politician Alfredo D'attorre:

But we will start this crisis motion and the procedure to start a new government."

The vote came at the end of a leadership committee meeting, which Letta did not attend. He said he wanted his party to freely decide whether to continue supporting him or not. On Friday, Letta is expected to formally announce his intention to resign to Italian President Giorgio Napolitano. Napolitano is then expected to call on Renzi to form a new administration. But before any announcements are made, a considerable amount of internal political shuffling is likely to ensue.

No one is claiming responsibility for the attacks. But, Sunni Islamists and other insurgents have been regaining ground in a violent campaign to destabilize Iraq's Shi'ite-led government. More than 1,000 people were killed in attacks across Iraq in January alone -- in a trend of intensifying violence that made last year the bloodiest since 2008.

Another train carrying crude oil derails

A 120-car Norfolk Southern Corporation train carrying heavy Canadian crude oil derailed and spilled in western Pennsylvania Thursday. There were no reports of injury when the 21 tank cars came off the track. But three of the crude tank cars spilled after the incident. The leaks were plugged and the company did not say how much oil spilled. This is the latest in a string of recent crude oil train derailments that has prompted calls for more stringent rules and regulations. A Senate hearing about the safety of transporting crude by rail was scheduled for Thursday but was delayed by the snow.

浙江婚礼礼堂坍塌 8人死亡
At least 8 people have been killed and more than 90 others injured when a building collapsed during a wedding ceremony in East China's Zhejiang Province.
The building collapsed at around 5:20 p.m. Beijing time Thursday in Yazhuang village, Panan County. About 200 people were attending the wedding. Local authorities have dispatched hundreds of rescuers to the site and taken the injured to hospital.
10 of them were in a severe condition. People buried in the rubble were rescued five hours after the collapse. Local residents said the building was 40 years old and the weight of the heavy snow on the roof may have triggered the collapse. The cause of the collapse is under investigation.

The Chinese Lantern Festival this year coincides with Valentine's Day. People across the country are planning to celebrate the combined festivals in traditional and new ways.
Well-known dancers and singers from Shanghai are visiting Taipei as people across the strait warm up for the coming Lantern Festival. The Shanghai troupe are singing, dancing and performing acrobatics in Taipei, before also visiting Taoyuan, Penghu and Yunlin.
Back in the mainland, a dragon lantern parade is essential for ushering in the festival. And in Zhejiang Province, people are lighting lanterns days in advance.
This year, Lantern Festival coincides with Valentine's Day. And as the festival atmosphere builds up, sales of flowers and chocolates, as well as a traditional Lantern Festival treat, are heating up fast.
"Sales of tangyuan and chocolates are increasing. Packed chocolates are selling well as young people like to give them as presents," said Zhang Bin, a supermarket employee in Shaoxing.
But because of snow and low temperatures in Yunnan, China's major flower farming region, prices of flowers are much higher than usual. "Normally, a rose costs five to eight yuan, but goes up to 15 yuan on Valentine's Day. This year, prices are estimated to reach 25 to 30 yuan," said flower shop owner Xiong Yao.
However, flower sales show no sign of dipping. And flowers booked by phone or on the internet are also receiving a warm holiday welcome.
