hold water字面上的意思是能“装水”。一个容器要能装水，质地得够严密，而且不能有任何缺口、裂缝。所以，如果一种理论或说法能够hold water，就是指它够紧密、没有破绽、能站得住脚。不过，hold water这个词组比较常用在否定句，表示“站不住脚”（doesn’t hold water) 。
