doom

词汇起源
[OE] Doom derives ultimately from *dō-, the Germanic base from which the verb do comes. This originally meant ‘put, place’, and so Germanic *dōmaz signified literally ‘that which is put’. By the time it reached Old English as dōm a more concrete sense ‘law, decree, judgment’ had developed (this lies behind the compound doomsday ‘day of judgment’ [OE], whose early Middle English spelling has been preserved in Domesday book). The modern sense ‘(evil) fate’ first appeared in the 14th century.

redeem 【根】eem,em=to take

词汇起源
[15] The -deem is not the same word as deem (which is related to doom). In fact, there never was a true -deem in it. It comes from Latin emere ‘take, buy’ (source also of English example, prompt, etc), which when combined with the prefix re- ‘again, back’ had a d grafted into it to produce redimere ‘buy back’.
