When the government makes plans to advance and society moves forward, some people will be left behind and their way of life forfeited. Gong Chang Hua was one of them. Gong was a hard working fisherman. He and two friends co-owned a wooden fishing boat and for a better harvest, they moved away from their hometown, Dongji Island, to a port 30 miles away.

We followed Gong for a year and saw how a fisherman lived. During the months that fishing is prohibited, Gong fixed his ship and got ready for the coming fishing season. Then he went back to Dongji Island to visit his in-laws. This period is the vacation time for all fishermen.

After a traditional ceremony, Gong was ready to fish again. The day Gong went to cast his first net of the season was the same day his only son took the high school entrance exam. The harvest was not good for Gong because of a storm. Then, facing the uprising cost for fuel, ice and fresh water, his fishing business was struggling. His son failed to enter his first choice high school and decided to study in a navigation school.

Right before Chinese New Year, the government informed Gong that all old fishing boats would be scrapped in order to protect the sea environment and resources. Gong’s friend dissolved the partnership with him after hearing the news. Facing all the bad news, Gong had to find a way to survive after the New Year…
