第 25 讲 信用卡(credit card)与难以置信的(incredible)--表示”相信”的词根"credere "

学生: 有了信用卡(credit card)，现在买东西越来越方便，甚至网上也可以轻松购物了。真
爽啊。老师，credit 的词源是什么?

老师: 是拉丁语词credere （＝to drust [信用], of money, to lend [借钱])。现在也是这个意
思。credit（信用）在商业界运用得越来越广泛，与金钱有关的信用都用credit 来表示。credible
是可信的，而 incredible 则是不可信的。

学生: 原来是相信的意思啊。那表示” 难以置信的” 词有 unbelievable 和 incredible，这有
什么区别吗?

老师: 问得好。believe 是指心理上没有怀疑地接受，其否定形式就是 unbelieve。credible
与此不同，它和管理、金钱或工作作风等背景情况有关。

学生: 太棒了，通过词源这么一分析这两个词的差异就非常明白了。词源的学习真是很有帮
助啊。老师，那 believe 的词源是什么呢?

老师: 它的词源既不是拉丁语，也不是希腊语，而是德语词 glauben (相信) 。这个词源自
对神的相信，据说进入希腊语演变为gelefan，因为某种原因又变形为belefan，最后进入西
班牙语后又演变成了 believe。
