A Canadian video game has gained tremendous popularity in China after it added a new character allegedly based on a controversial Chinese doctor who practiced electroconvulsive therapy as a cure for internet addiction in teenagers.

Dead by Daylight, an asymmetric survival horror video game developed by Canadian game development studio Behavior Interactive, released a trailer introducing the new character last Tuesday.

The game developer described the new character, Spark of Madness, as "a killer doctor," and his appearance resembles an electric humanoid.

Though there is no official announcement about who or what inspired the character, many Chinese players believe the character is modeled after Yang Yongxin, a highly controversial clinical psychiatrist from Shandong province who used electric shock therapy on teenage internet addicts to eradicate their so-called "evil desire."
虽然没有官方声明到底是谁启发了制作这个角色的念头，但是许多中国玩家认为该角色的原形就是杨永信--他是一位来自山东省的临床心理医生，曾因用电击法治疗青少年的网瘾、消除他们所谓的“邪恶欲望”而备受争议。
"In order to show their appreciation for Chinese players' support, the game developers promised to add a Chinese monster in the game in 2016. They even authorized a Chinese player, who goes by the name Esther, to conduct an online poll to find out what kind of new character Chinese players want," Li Zhenqi, a Beijing-based professional game player and commentator, told People's Daily Online.

According to the online poll conducted on SteamCN, a popular Chinese game forum, over 54 percent of the respondents chose Yang Yongxin as the character's inspiration. Some other options included Heibai Wuchang, two deities in Chinese folk religion in charge of escorting the spirits of the dead to the underworld.
据《蒸汽动力》开展的在线调查显示，超过54%的受访者选择以杨永信作为新角色的原形。其他的提议还包括中国民间传说中护送死者灵魂前往阴间的黑白无常。
"I chose Yang because I want the world to know about his evil practice, and how ridiculous his so-called therapy is. The new character is a killer in the game, which suits Yang well, as he has been using pseudoscience to torture people," a netizen wrote on the forum.
