Charles Li, chief executive of Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing, said recent turmoil in China's equity market will delay future programs to connect with mainland financial markets.

香港交易所(HKEx)行政总裁李小加(Charles Li)表示，近期中国股市的动荡将令香港与中国内地金融市场互联互通计划进程放缓。

"Overall, psychologically this is not the time to talk a lot about mutual market access opening, when you have just put out a big fire, you don't want to talk about buying a new sofa and doing a nice window dressing. You want to calm down, figure out how to clear it up and move forward," Mr Li said.

“总的来说，从心理上讲，眼下确实不是过多谈论市场互联互通计划的时候，在刚刚扑灭大火之后，你不想谈论买一件新沙发和好好装饰门面。你想要冷静下来，想想如何扫清障碍，然后推进这个计划，”李小加说。

Future connections between China and Hong Kong on derivatives will now take longer amid a debate about the role of stock index futures in the recent equity market turmoil, he added.

他补充称，考虑到人们正就股指期货在最近股市动荡中扮演的角色展开争论，中国内地和香港将需要更长时间才能实现未来在衍生品上的互联互通。

HKEx hopes to expand access to the London Metal Exchange for mainland players, who account for around 25 per cent of current trading on the exchange, Li said. HKEx bought the LME for $2.2 bn in 2012. HKEx also has plans to launch a link with the Shenzhen stock exchange but no firm date has been given.

李小加说，港交所希望扩大伦敦金属交易所(LME)对内地交易者的准入，中国内地交易者目前约占LME成交额的25%。2012年，港交所以22亿美元收购了LME。港交所还计划推出与深圳证交所的互联互通，但没有给出确切的推出日期。

"If China truly wants to influence and gain pricing power globally allowing a more complete and full access is the right way to do it," Mr Li said.

李小加说：“如果中国真想影响并赢得全球定价权，那么允许更完整、更全面的准入就是实现这一目标的正确途径。”

In the next few months, HKEx will unveil new measures to link the LME closer to Hong Kong, he said.

Eventually, the company hopes to expand the LME business into the mainland physical commodity markets, he said.

李小加称，最终，港交所希望把LME的业务扩展到中国内地的实物大宗商品市场上。

Li said that HKEx is not looking at acquisitions and the company is focused on building an exchange that translates China's growth potential.

他说，港交所并未考虑收购，而是集中精力打造一家把中国增长潜力变为自身增长潜力的交易所。

"This is going to generate tremendous amount of potential for us to grow and that growth for us is much more lower hanging fruit and much more powerful than going across the ocean to take over some cheaper exchange and some how pretend i can fix their problems better than they can," he said.

“这将为我们带来巨大的增长潜力。对我们来说，比起飘洋过海去收购某家较便宜的交易所、并莫名其妙地假装自己能较对方更好地修复他们的问题，这种增长要容易实现得多、也强劲得多，”李小加说。
