China's services sector slowed to a four month low last month as cost burdens in the sector rose, according to a private measure.

HSBC's China services index for October offered a reading of 52.9, down from 53.5 in September and the slowest reading since July.

Any reading above 50 suggests growth but the slowdown adds to pressure on policymakers in Beijing, who are trying to prop up growth with resorting to strong fiscal or monetary stimulus.

The reading, compiled from 400 private sector companies, is in line with the state-sponsored survey of the non-manufacturing sector, which hit a nine-month low earlier this week. The 'official' survey is larger and includes bigger companies.

Hongbin Qu, HSBC economist, said input prices continued rising but output prices saw a slight fall.

Overall, the service sector grew steadily in October as the underlying business conditions continue to look better than in the manufacturing part of the economy. While this pattern will likely continue, we still expect further easing measures in the coming months to help offset the downward pressures on the economy.
