Experts in the United States, the Red Cross, and other official organizations all agree that “drop, cover, and hold on” is the appropriate action to reduce injury and death during earthquakes.
Earthquakes usually occur 31 any warning and may be so violent that you cannot run; you 32 will most likely be knocked to the ground where you happen to be. “Drop, cover, and hold on” gives you the best overall chance of protecting yourself during an earthquake. Dropping, covering your head (and your body by being under a strong table if possible), and holding onto furniture (even if it is moving) offers the best overall level of protection in most situations. In cases 33 an earthquake is less violent, you might be able to move to a 34 advantageous position (e.g. away from breaking windows, etc.). As you drop to the floor, cover your head, and hold on to a solid object.
Studies of injuries and deaths 35 by earthquakes indicate that you are much more likely to be injured by falling or 36 objects (TVs, lamps, glass, bookcases, etc.) than to die in a collapsed building. If there is no nearby space beneath a table or other furniture that can provide protection from these objects, then you should get next to a large piece of furniture such as a sofa, cover your head, and hold on to the furniture when it moves. 37 there is no furniture, get next to an inside wall if possible. If you are in bed, the best thing to do is to stay where you are and cover your head with a pillow.
If a building 38 collapse, rescue teams will search through the ruins for victims, using tools, search dogs, and electronic instruments that can detect the presence of live people. Survivors are usually found in spaces large enough for a human within the ruins, called “ 39 Void(空的)Space”. It can be as large as an adult, or in the case of small children or infants, a very small space. The main goal of “drop, cover, and hold on” is to protect you from falling or flying objects, and to 40 the chance of survival if the building actually collapses.
