UNIT 6
Expansion 6
Exercise 1
Halloween is popular festival
in the United States
and in other English-speaking countries.
Each October 31st,
children dress as ghosts.
In the evening,
they knock on neighbors' doors
and ask for candies.
This is called "trick or treating"
because when the children arrive at a house
they call out"Trick or treat!"
This is to tell the people that
if they do not give them any candy--
the "treat",
they may play a trick on them!
Another well-known Halloween tradition is the
jack-o'lantern.
This is an empty pumpkin shell
with pieces cut out to make a face.
People light the jack-o'lanterns
with a candle inside.
At night, they look strange and terrible.
And this is what children enjoy about Halloween
-scaring each other!-
Thanksgiving is public holiday
in the United States.
On the fourth Thursday of November,
people celebrate with family or friends.
They give thanks for their good luck and
enjoy a big meal including roast turkey,
sweet potatoes,and pies.
Younger children celebrate Thanksgiving
by acting in plays at school.
They dress in a special way
and tell the story of the first Thanksgiving
in 1621.
