Janet: When is the American National Day?
珍妮特：美国的国庆节是哪天呢？
Nicole: The 4th of July, is usually referred to as Independence Day.
妮可：7月4日，通常被叫做独立日。
Janet: Is that when America became independent?
珍妮特：美国是在那天独立的吗？
Nicole: Not exactly. In 1776, the colonies were still fighting against the British. On July 4th, the Continental Congress adopted The Declaration of Independence, which was drafted by Thomas Jefferson, and famously stated "all men are created equal”.

Janet: I know Jefferson is one of the founding fathers of the US. How do the American people celebrate this day?

Nicole: We would hold barbecues, picnics, and family gatherings.

Janet: That's very different from our way of celebrating the national day.

Nicole: Is it? What is the Chinese way?

Janet: We would have a grand military parade on Tian'an men Square every tenth year.
