Flattery Could Get YouIn Trouble

Lesson 5 Key Conversation "Flattery Could Get You In Trouble"

Paula: Mom! Susie's doing everything I do. Make her stop.

Mrs. Wilson: Don't be cross with her. "Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery." She just wants to be like her big sister. She'll soon grow out of it.

Paula: I'm sorry, but she's only trying to make fun of me, Mom. That's not flattery, but more like a left-handed compliment.

Mrs. Wilson: Well just don't listen to her. I told you, Susie will soon grow up. She's not that much younger than you are.

Paula: I hope it doesn't take too long, she's driving me crazy!

Mrs. Wilson: Keep thinking about what I told you. Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.

Paula: OK, OK. Hey, Mom. You remember Mary, that girl in my class, don't you? She's always trying to copy me, too!

Mrs. Wilson: You must be a very popular girl if others in your class are beginning to copy you. You must feel flattered!

Paula: Imitation may be the sincerest form of flattery, but I don't feel very flattered when Mary copies my answers to the homework.

Mrs. Wilson: Oh dear, I guess that kind of "flattery" could get you in trouble at school!!
