说明：此文不讨论英语中的外来语词。

1．词尾的字母e通常不发音，例如：love, behave, native. 需要记住的特例只有recipe等少数词。

2．字母gh组合有时不发音，如night, caught, sigh等等。但在另一些词中，gh组合可能发[f]音，例如laugh, draught. 此外，还应该记住dinghy一词中的gh发音为[g]。

3．以“h+元音”开头的部分词，h不发音，如：honor, honest, heir等。

4．字母组合wh在o前w不发音，例如：wholly, whose, wholesale; 其他时候在英式英语中h不发音，美式英语中发音为[hw]。如：white, whip, nowhere.

5．以gn, kn, mn, pn开头的词，其中只有字母n发音。例如：gnu, gnome, kneel, knit, mnemonic, pneumonia.

6．以wr开头的词，w不发音。例如：wraith, wreath, wrap.

7．字母组合sc出现在e, i, y之前，c不发音。例如：scene, science, scythe.

8．字母组合dg, dj中，d不发音。例如：judge, adjourn.

9．字母组合tch中，t不发音。例如：pitch, hotchpotch.

10．以exh开头的词，h不发音。例如：exhaust, exhilarate, exhibit. 特例：exhale中的h发[h]音。

11．以rh开头的词，h不发音。例如：rheumatism, rhinoceros, rhyme.

12．字母组合bt中，有时b不发音。例如：debt, doubt, subtle.

13．字母组合 al在辅音前，l有时不发音。例如：talk, walk, fall（可视为第一个l不发音，第二个发音）。在另一些词中，l则发音，例如：salt.

14．以ps开头的词，p不发音。例如：psychology, psychiatrist, psalm.

15．字母组合ck, cq中，c不发音。例如：lack, quick, acquaintance.

16．字母组合ch中，h偶尔有不发音的。例如：stomach（记住其复数为stomachs）, chemistry, scheme.

17．字母组合st中，有时t不发音。例如：listen, whistle, bristle.

18．元音字母组合中常有不发音的元音。这种情况比较复杂，我就不一一列举了。
