Society 与community 有人问，国际社会能否翻译为“international society”。的确，在英文中表示“社会”的有“society”和“community”，但“国际社会”应该翻译为“international community ”或“community of nations”。 Society与community同源自拉丁文，皆指社会，虽然如此，二者在用法上仍有差别。

Society指（1）社会，如西方社会（Western society）;(2) 社会阶层，如高收入阶层（a high income society）；（3）上流社会，社交界，如当地的上流社会（a local society）；（4）交往，如乐于与邻居交往（enjoy the society of one's neighbors）；（5） 总称的朋友，伴侣，如有许多朋友（have plenty of society ）；（6） 社团，会社，学会，如辩论社（a debating society）; (7) 动植物的小群落，如黄蜂窝（a society of wasps）。

Community指（1）社会或社区，特指由同住一地区或一国的人所构成的社会或社区，如纽约的华侨社会（the Chinese community in New York）；（2）团体，界，如工商界（business community）；（3）公众，如社会贫困阶层（the poorer classes of community）；（4）国家间的共同体，如欧洲防务共同体（European Defense Community）；（5）共有，共享，共同责任，如货物的共有（the community of goods）；（6）共同性，一致，相同，如利益的一致（the community of interests）。

由此可见，这两个词虽然相似，但仍有一些区别： 1. 表示国际社会用“community” 2. 表示国内社会或上流社会，用“society”。例如“society page”是社交新闻版，“society woman”是上流社会的女子。 3. 表示社区，即国内社会中的较小单位，用“community ”。例如“community page” 是社区新闻版，“community leader”是社区领导。 4. 表示社团，用“society”。 5. 其他如共同天线（antenna ），团体精神（spirit community）则都用“community” 当这两个词做形容词时，尤可看出之间的差别，因此使用时要格外小心。
