Christmas and New Year Message from UK Foreign Secretary William Hague
11 December 2013
The last year has demonstrated the value and the importance of diplomacy: on Syria and on Iran, hard diplomatic effort has made advances over the toughest terrain. The UK has shown determination and leadership, including through our G8 Presidency, our strong support for the Arms Trade Treaty, and our championing of the cause of preventing sexual violence in conflict.
In 2014 it is vital that we keep the wheels of diplomacy turning towards an end to the conflict in Syria and a comprehensive resolution of the Iranian nuclear issue. And we must spare no effort in seeking to put an end to the horrors of sexual violence in conflict, which is why we will hold an unprecedented global summit in London to raise awareness and to stimulate action.
In 2014, the UK will also host the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow and the NATO-Wales Summit--important events that will bring international attention to different parts of Britain and everything they have to offer.
The next year will also remind us of the courage and the resolve of our servicemen and women as we mark the centenary of the First World War and we move towards the end of combat operations in in Afghanistan.
At this time, our thoughts also go to all those who represent our nation overseas, respond to crisis and travel to all corners of the world and support Britain’s economic recovering.
I thank all those who work so hard for the UK and for the sake of a safer, fairer and more prosperous world. And I wish you and your families wherever you are a Merry Christmas and a peaceful and Happy New Year.
