Shen, also known as Ian, an exchange student at Kwantlen Polytechnic University,Canada, was then enjoying the afternoon on a beach near Ucluelet. With him was a friend, Myles Hagar, and Hagar’s two grandchildren.
Silently and suddenly a lion appeared out of nowhere.

“If Ian had not been there, shouting at the lion, holding his ground, the lion would certainly have hurt Iris while I was trying to take care of Julien. I could not have fought off the lion alone without Ian’s help.” Hagar said later.
With Iris in his arms, Shen and Hagar chased the animal back into the woods. Julien was flown to hospital in nearby Vancouver immediately and has since made a complete recovery(康复).

Watching news about the environment on TV can make people feeel terrible. The problems seem so big that it’s difficult to imagine how persons can do anything about them. Rebecca Hosking, however, thought differently.
Rebecca is a wilflife camerawoman and she was filming a documentary for the BBC in the Pacific Ocean when she saw something that made her cry — quite a lot of dead birds that had died because they had eaten some plastic that is thrown into the sea each year. Beaches that used to be beautiful were covered with plastic toys, bottles, pens — every plastic thing you can think of.
Rebecca decided she had to do something. Back at home she thought about what she could do to help deal with the problem of throwaway plastic. In her home town of Modbury, she asked local shop owners to stop using plastic bags in their shops.
Plastic bags are used everywhere in the UK. The numbers are amazing. The UK uses are nearly 17,000,000,000 plastic bags each year. And the bags can take a very long time to break down because they are chemical(化学物)rather than natural, so each year the sea and the environment become more and more polluted.
To Rebecca’s surprise, the shop owners agreed and Modbury became the first plastic bag free town in the UK. Instead, shops offered cotton bags or paper bags. Other towns around the UK followed Modbury’s example and are becoming plastic bag free. It won’t deal with all of the world’s environment problems but it shows that there is something we can do and one person can make a big change with a strong enough decision.

A. found the ocean was polluted B. was thrown into the water

B. we can do something about environment peoblems
C. plastic bags are used in all towns except Modbury
D. the shop owners were against Rebecca’s idea
51. The best title for the passage might be .
A. The Dead Birds B. The Town of Modbury
C. The Bag Lady D. The Plastic Bags

School is out for the summer in some areas, and for many children, that means weeks of sleeping in late, trips to the swimming pool or hours spent in front of the TV. These months of inactivity — away from the daily tiring things of school — are something that young people look forward to, but it can have a detrimental(不利的)influence on the knowledge they have.
Studies have shown that children lose a lot in math skills during the summer months. Chidren who spend littlt time learning experience a much greater amount of learning loss(损失)than those who often take part in summer programs.
So when school starts again in the fall, teachers often have to spend several weeks reteaching children material that they have forgotten.
Experts(专家)suggests that parents make sure the summer months are a time of continued learning. Forexample, they suggest that lunch time is a good time to improve a child’s spoken skills, simply through conversation. A trip to the supermarket can be an opportunity to improve a child’s math skills by having him or her add up the cost of food. And there is no better way to prevent learning loss than by having a child read every day.
Fortunately, there are many programs that can help parents. The best place to start is at your local library. Most libraries have summer reading programs that are filled with fun activities. A strong musical education also improves learning. Find out summer music camps in your area.
We think that children should have fun during the summer break, but it should not be a vacation from learning. We strongly suggest parents should take advantage of the many educational opportunities available for their children during the coming weeks.

“Hi there, how are you doing?”
“ Great, thanks, how are you?”
“Just fine, thank you — uh, and you?”
Ugh. Pause(停顿). Uncomfortable silence. Downward look. Now what? Here are some pieces of advice on how to keep small talk going.
71
When talking to someone one-on-one, you have one minute to find out everything about them. You have the rest of your life to tell them about you. So let the other person talk.
72
The most basic thing to do is keep things simple. “What are your plans for the weekend?” “How did you spend the holiday?” Stay away from difficult topics.
73
If you don’t know the person well or haven’t seen them for a while, don’t suppose they are still working for a specific(具体的)company or they are still married, and so on. Ask “What’s been going on with the work?” instead of “How’s the job at the newspaper?”
74
About 99 percent of the time, being right doesn’t really matter. If someone says a car is a nice kind of blue, but it doesn’t look blue, there’s completely no reason to be right. Be agreeable.
75
Don’t just say. “I had a great day.” Tell them a story. People love stories, be it something that happened at work or with the family. It’s more interesting than facts.

Hello, everyone! I’m glad to be here to talk about some differences between the English students and the Chinese students. In England, students go to school by bike or on school buses. After school, they usually clean up the garden and look after the pets. What’s more, they have to make pocket money by working in spare time. However in China, students often go to school in their parents’ cars. They spend most of their time on study after school and hardly do chores at home. Also, parents provide students with their pocket money. Different countries have different cultures. I think we should study hard, but we should practice living skills at the same time.
