1.competence n.能力，胜任某种工作的资格
【记】词根记忆：com（表加强）+pet(追求，寻求)+ence--追求目标的能力--能力
【例】For a good career in almost any field, computer competence is a must.
要获得任何领域的好工作，使用计算机的能力都是必需的。(2003)
We doubted his competence as a professor.
我们怀疑他能否胜任教授的工作。

2.emphasize vt．强调，着重，加强
【例】Present-day society is much freer and earlier because it emphasizes individuality.

【用】emphasize=give emphasis to．表示“强调，着重”。

3.fundamental adj.基础的，基本的；起始的；主要的 n．[pl．]基本原则（原理），根本法则（规律），纲要
【记】词根记忆：fund(基础)+a+ment(名词后缀)+al(…的)--基础的
【例】The fundamental similarity of liquids and gases becomes clearly apparent when the temperature and pressure are raised somewhat.

【辨】fundamental, elementary二者都有“基本的”之意。fundamental指“基本的，根本的”，着重于本质根源，如：a fundamental law；elementary强调初级的、简单的或基本元素，如：an elementary need。

4.analyze v．分析
【例】We must analyze every failure to find its cause.
我们必须分析每一次失败，找出其原因。

5.engulf Vt.吞没，淹没：吞食
【记】联想记忆：en(使)+gulf(吞没)--吞没
【例】Flames engulfed the building and caused many casualties.
火焰吞没了这座大楼，导致大量人员伤亡。
【用】固定搭配engulf oneself in表示“专心致志地…，孜孜不倦地从事…”。

6.neutral adj.中立的，中性的
【记】词根记忆：neutr(中间)+al--在中间位置的--中立的，中性的
【例】The government acted as a neutral role during the talks.
政府在谈话中扮演了中立角色。

7.coordinate v．调节，协调，统筹
【记】词根记忆：co+ordin(秩序)+ate--使有秩序--协调
【例】You must coordinate your movements when dancing.
跳舞时动作必须协调。
【用】coordinate后可接with．表示“与…协调一致”。

8.reflect v．反射，反映；表达，表现；考虑，思考
【记】词根记忆：re(回)+flect(弯曲)--弯曲过来--反射
【例】Above the trees are the hills, whose magnificence the river faithfully reflects on the surface.
河面清晰地映出山上茂密的树木。(2003)
The tone of the article reflected the writer's mood at the time.
文章的语调表达出作者当时的心境。（2006）
